Do you do any volunteer work?

For whom? Doing what? How much time do you give to it?

I'm a National Official for a non-profit Engineering professional organization. Probably around 100 hours per year.

My kids now play on playground equipment that I helped build several years before they were born.

After helping with another event at a park a couple of years ago, I saw a couple of older gentlemen working on this veteran's memorial, and I jumped in and helped the rest of the day. I was pretty oblivious to the gathered viewers until they sent me this photo. I like it because I think it shows a good message.
What's the message? Everyone can sit around as long as there's still one sap willing to jump in the hole and dig?

Why not? Rainmakers are a big deal. Be a fun weekend trip for some folks. If it raises $100, it's worth the effort.

I don't know if that is true, but they have developed such an effective marketing machine that funds for other charities or other types of cancers are a lot slimmer than they used to be because Komen is king now.

I think typically, more people would complain about the lack of the speed of the digging that someone else is doing, than grab a shovel themselves.

The past 3 years, I've been trying to mentor a few HS kids towards careers, and I've been doing what I can to help them with scholarships, advice, or putting them in contact with my contacts and trying to help them with things like Internships at quality locations. When I do it, the only thing I ever ask them to do in return is pass it on. They're required by handshake, at some point in their careers, to either help other kids from our community, or consider donating funds or skills to a local project down the road. If they're an architect or engineer....donate some time to design something, or give a kid an internship in their organization. Exponential growth is what I'm hoping for, because in a small town, 2-3 motivated people make a huge difference.

If kids watching me dig a hole at a park, put a small blip of community service into one of those kids, It's worth digging a hole, setting some grade and pouring some concrete on a nice saturday afternoon.

So you're an engineer? If so that explains why you went to UF.

Yeah, prom is a real drain on a lot of families and it's not supposed to be that way. But if I had to cough up an extra $500 this spring, it would be painful.

I don't believe that. She promised me she would never sleep with the Lollipop Guild.

Technically, there wasn't really any sleeping, so she's kept her promise.
