Bad knee eliminates Mark Ingram from two draft boards

Report: Bad knee eliminates Mark Ingram from two draft boards

Posted by Evan Silva on April 13, 2011, 8:01 PM EDT
Getty ImagesAlabama running back Mark Ingram underwent arthroscopic surgery on August 31 of last year, just prior to the start of the college season. He missed only two games, returning on September 18 to thump the Duke Blue Devils for 151 yards and two touchdowns on nine carries.
Ingram would go on to average 5.54 yards per carry on the season, down from his Heisman-winning 6.12 mark as a sophomore, but still plenty admirable considering the stiff competition in the Southeastern Conference.
But there have been rumors that the long-term stability of Ingram’s knee is tenuous. And NFL Network’s Mike Lombardi reported something that may substantiate that speculation on Wednesday evening’s Path to the Draft.
“I’ve had two teams tell me the knee is very bad,” said Lombardi. “He won’t be on their boards. These are teams that need running backs.”
NFL Network’s Mike Mayock didn’t go as far as Lombardi, but did acknowledge Ingram is in danger of falling out of round one, where he’s so often projected.
“Even fully healthy, I have concerns about whether he’s a first-round pick,” said Mayock of Ingram. “I’m not so sure he’s going there.”
As usual, we’d caution to approach this information while keeping in mind the time of year. Misinformation is king. But this isn’t the first time Lombardi has spoken of potential long-range knee issues for Ingram.
“I think it could cause him to slip (in the draft),” he said on March 31. Lombardi suggested that Ingram may have degenerative arthritis, a condition that has been linked to Da’Quan Bowers and will likely cause the Clemson defensive end to fall on draft weekend, as well.

There are a number of backs I'd rather have (Taiwan Jones, Daniel Thomas etc). I'd rather have another Charles, not another Jones.

And I might be one of the few who don't believe in this "Change of Pace Back" nonsense.

GAWD...the more i watch and hear about Taiwan Jones the more i pray that the Chiefs find a way to draft him. My only fear is that he's gone by the time we pick in the 2nd. Rumored to be running 1.4s 10 yard splits.

imagine putting him in the backfield with Charles; McCluster in the slot. Draft Hankerson in the 1st to pair with Bowe on the outside.

Oh ****, I just jizzed myself. SOB. brb.

He is not a workhorse but arguebly you'd get more out of those 14 carries than out of the 14-20+ carries that Jones had when he split with Charles this last year. Not to mention we might actually have a short yardage back finally.

This.

Ingram sure looked hurt at the combine, didn't he?

Seriously, some of you guys are so gullible. Yeah, I'd love to get him in the 4th round...hopefully all of the other first rounders will be there in the 4th too!

Short yardage backs are so overrated. Calling a back a short yardage back is just another way of saying he's not explosive.

Our short yardage issues have much more to do with our O-Line, not our backs. These bulldozer style backs went out of style 5 years ago.

The best backs these days have speed on speed, they cut and slash and explode through holes. They don't run up the centers ass ala LJ. Gimme another CJ, JC, AP etc.

Not that he's the guy I want us to take, but I don't think I'd be pissed if he ended up being our first pick.

Having 2 studs at RB would be a good thing, and drafting a RB in the 1st (right now) gets you a 5 year contract. Use, franchise, release. All his good years are gone.

Absolutely. I wonder how many of these rumors are started by teams in order to position the players for themselves.

He could represent great value if he fell to the third round or so. Not likely, but with RBs being disposable commodities that is the highest I'd spend a pick on one...

Good running backs are a dime a dozen. There's absolutely no reason to use
a first-round pick on a back when you can get a good one, a very, very good one in later rounds.
