Anyone know anything about College Station/Bryan TX.?

Anyone ever lived or live there... visited... have family there or nearby?

How about Galveston?

My daughter wants to go to college at Texas A&M because they are the top rated school for her field of interest and part of my research is simply asking around... and since I know no one there or who has been there I thought I'd try here. And as hard as it may be to believe she wants me to move there with her... or near her I should say. I can research my own career choices myself and have been... just looking for a general or even specific opinion of the area.

Any serious input is appreciated. Telling me it's the anti-freeze capital of the world is fine too although not as helpful.

Thanks in advance.

Depending on your racial persuasion the demographics may be extremely skewed either against you or in your favor.

Some like Houston, some don't. Me? I live in the burbs Northeast of Houston and love being close to a big city and generally like Houston...and I've been here for the better part of 15 years. We did move to Kansas for about 8 months over the winter of 2007-2008 and I hated it. The only good thing was being able to watch the Chiefs every week, even though that was hard because they were bad.

I used to love Kansas City. Now? I think it's dirty and old looking and the people drive too slow. The shopping sucks...you have to drive from one side of the city to the other sometimes just to find the good stores. What it boils down to, simply, is your own perspective. Yes, caucasians are an ethnic minority in parts of Houston, but that make the town suck? It depends on your perspective. I worked in Southwest Houston (out in da hood) and I felt safer in that part of town than I ever did driving down the Paseo. Again, perspective.

As far as Bryan/College Station goes: nice town and decent school. I'd rather live there than Austin (which is so full of itself).

So you say College Station is a shithole... Phobia said it along with Bryan are nice... hmm. What makes it a shithole persay? What is it about Galveston that is so bad? I do know a guy who has family there and he loves it. Different perspectives.
OK here are the problems with all three places...

ALL of them have ZERO to offer. No significant culture, no nice geography (Galveston has awful beaches) and the people suck. Houston has awful crime, and is just an overall awful cesspool.

Of the three, College Station/Bryan is the best choice by far and it's pretty worthless UNLESS you are in school there. It's a typical college town that caters to the college crowd... Oh and it's full of rednecks.

I CAN NOT stress enough that none of those places has anything to offer. Life's too short to live in awful cities full of awful people.

Austin is full of itself because the rest of Texas sucks so ****ing bad that the locals here get their self opinion buoyed up by comparison. There are plenty of great cities outside of Texas, but Austin is really the only decent one IN Texas (Ft Worth isn't terrible I guess)

Here is a review I found of A&M and College Station... just something to consider.

Quote:
Okay, the town is the most conservative imaginable and the college station police just love to bust kids left and right for the most minor of offenses. If you want a dui or a few mip's this can all happen in one weekend. Oh yeah, there are bike cops that cruise around handing out citations to students for no bicycle headlights, non riding on side walk, etc etc... The culture of the school? Well, 89% redneck and the remainder is just take your pick Asian grad students, hispanics, Indian grad students, Pakistani grad students, and very few people of color(could you blame them though?). So most of your undergrads are composed of suburban wannabe country boy redneck middle class ultra conservative white kids. The rotc program? Well, did you know anyone in High School that was in ROTC that was a cool dude? Me neither. These guys are bald, white, nerds, and are seriously lacking in the identity department. Many ppl here are lacking identity so they must use this schools militant closed minded culture to define who they are and what they stand for throughout their life. the traditional sayings such as 'whoop" "howdy" and "gig em'" are just old and sound dumb. Many here love big trucks, george bush, and the pre civil rights era. Anyone who wants to disagree w/ me is probably from some upper middle class suburban neighbor hood and their white parents probably came here too. Im not the only student here that has these views. Ive met many others. I came to school to meet different ppl from all walks of life. However, most of what I got from here is backwoods rednecks, and some hard core bible thumping christians. Hate to give such a grim report but this town and school is boring. It has left a terrible stain in my mind that is not coming out w/ ordinaty bleach! It is over a 2 hr drive to get to austin, houston, dallas, or anywhere. Once you are here you are not only stuck in a redneck university but also a redneck town I am white by the way.
I have quite a few friends who have gone there, and this is a pretty common opinion. I will say this though, once you get deep into the Engineering type of programs (I'm sure Marine Biology would be the same) you see far less of the Redneck/Core mentality... but you are still surrounded by it.

Haha OK I get your point. I was never interested in Houston though I was just asking why everyone was down on it. Galveston would be where my daughter would do a lot of her course work in marine biology so I asked about that. College Station/Bryan would have something for us if she/we went there.... she'd have school.... I'd have work for a handful of years in a market thats bigger than my current one which is a good resume step to someplace I'd like to be later.... plus I'd be near my kid... so I don't have to be living in fun city.

As far as rednecks go I program Country and Classic Rock radio stations so I kind of need them around.

If your dead inside maybe... otherwise there is NOTHING there man... ZERO. If you're a student that is different, but what the **** is there for a non-student? I guess noonan could always take an annex class on sheep ****ing.

As far as the school goes, it's a fine school. No question there.

At least we agree on Houston.

I guess I was thinking more for his daughter, than I was for him. If he was only going to be there for a couple of years, I can think of worse places to live.

Unless I really loved it and want to stay after she's graduated, me going with her is...

1. My chance to get the **** out of here finally. Her mom and I got divorced 7 years ago and I've stayed in this rinky dink town because my baby is here and I wanted to be here for her growing up. No job was worth missing that to me. Now I'm counting the time until she graduates and we're both free.

2. An opportunity to move on WHILE staying near her. We're very close and I'd love that.

3. A chance to finally make a little better money hopefully

4. Did I mention getting the **** out of here?

I'm sure A&M will be fine for her BUT... here is why I am giving the advice I am giving...

I know almost NO ONE who has gone there who doesn't somewhat regret it. They all will say "oh but it's a great education..." but they feel like they missed out on what schools in better areas have to offer as a whole experience.

If it were ME and I was going into the field... I would look at UT of course (I actually like Port Aransas) but I'd probably be more serious about UCSD, from what I have read the Scripps Institution there is even better than what A&M offers. I WOULDN'T look at Hawaii... which may sound strange. I LOVE Hawaii but once again, I have 2 or 3 friends who went to school there and I always get a slight sense of regret from them.
