Anyone know anything about College Station/Bryan TX.?

Anyone ever lived or live there... visited... have family there or nearby?

How about Galveston?

My daughter wants to go to college at Texas A&M because they are the top rated school for her field of interest and part of my research is simply asking around... and since I know no one there or who has been there I thought I'd try here. And as hard as it may be to believe she wants me to move there with her... or near her I should say. I can research my own career choices myself and have been... just looking for a general or even specific opinion of the area.

Any serious input is appreciated. Telling me it's the anti-freeze capital of the world is fine too although not as helpful.

Thanks in advance.

I really can't stand the crowd at A&M. Nothing but crew cuts and rednecks. If you're not an aggie they can ****ing smell it on you, and you're ostracized. They have a bunch of weird traditions that they think are the greatest thing in the world. Idk.. I've gone there for parties and tailgates a few times over the past few years and I always wound up having a awful time.

I know almost NO ONE who has gone there who doesn't somewhat regret it. They all will say "oh but it's a great education..." but they feel like they missed out on what schools in better areas have to offer as a whole experience.

If it were ME and I was going into the field... I would look at UT of course (I actually like Port Aransas) but I'd probably be more serious about UCSD, from what I have read the Scripps Institution there is even better than what A&M offers. I WOULDN'T look at Hawaii... which may sound strange. I LOVE Hawaii but once again, I have 2 or 3 friends who went to school there and I always get a slight sense of regret from them.
Fair enough. Like I mentioned before TA&M is her first choice right now based on what information she's been given. But it's not her only choice and she has some time but we'll probably want to start seriously looking at places in another year. In the meantime I'm on the prowl for all the info I can get so I really appreciate the honest input.

She's interested in culture and really wants to go someplace different than here... the more I hear this the more I wonder about A&M. We'll obviously visit and give it it's due but all input is good.

I've haven't heard anything but good things about Austin (aside from a couple people in this thread) and the Corpus Christi area. 2 years ago I had a job interview at Entercom in KC... pretty much THE place I want to be and work. I went out the day before and stayed with a friend and the night before I got to considering what happens if I got the job. I'd be 4 hours from my daughter... working a job I really wanted... but 4 hours from my daughter... during her formative years. I decided I couldn't move away so I called and cancelled the interview the morning of. I don't regret it at all, I get to see her 3-4 times a week and be involved in her life. But now that she'll be going away it's my turn to get a fresh start too and she wants that for me as well.

I'm sure she would have an alright time if she went to school there.. but if she is truly interested in gaining some culture, College Station has little to offer. Unless she really likes country music or something...

Never been to B/CS, but the last time I had been to Galveston, it looked like it had been hit by a hurricane.

Not so much for her... it's my job.

I'm glad I posted this thread... positive or not there's a lot of input. A lot more than I expected.

So I feel like College Station/A&M is getting a (somewhat) undeserved bum rap in this thread. I'll try to address a few points.

1. College Station is a pretty conservative town but to say it's entirely full of rednecks is disingenuous at best. The ROTC crowd is generally a bunch of douches (as has been mentioned) but they generally keep to themselves and you don't really have to interact with them if you don't want to.

I moved to College Station from Portland, OR which has more in common with Austin than any other Texas city. It doesn't have the eclectic culture of an Austin or Portland but it has it's own small town charm. I felt at home even though I'd never been to the South before. And I certainly can't be called a redneck. I drive a compact car, have never shot a gun, hate fishing, and never had a mullet, crewcut, etc.

2. The traditions are dumb. True, some people really get into them but the vast majority don't really care. I was never once yelled at for something I did or didn't do.

3. Cops have nothing better to do than write tickets for dumb crap? Sure, I've heard the stories. I never once got pulled over, ticketed, or even really interacted with the police. Neither did anyone I personally knew.

4. AustinChief - I don't regret attending A&M. So now you know one person that doesn't regret it. And I would never attend UT.

I'm sure there will be more. Flame away.

Actually it's not because I went to A&M. I'd never even been to Texas before I decided to attend there. It's just every UT grad I met came off as either an idiot or rich and spoiled.

I know it's not true of everyone that attends there but when I was looking at the top programs I immediately crossed UT off my list.
