Anyone know anything about College Station/Bryan TX.?

Anyone ever lived or live there... visited... have family there or nearby?

How about Galveston?

My daughter wants to go to college at Texas A&M because they are the top rated school for her field of interest and part of my research is simply asking around... and since I know no one there or who has been there I thought I'd try here. And as hard as it may be to believe she wants me to move there with her... or near her I should say. I can research my own career choices myself and have been... just looking for a general or even specific opinion of the area.

Any serious input is appreciated. Telling me it's the anti-freeze capital of the world is fine too although not as helpful.

Thanks in advance.

I moved to College Station from Portland, OR which has more in common with Austin than any other Texas city. It doesn't have the eclectic culture of an Austin or Portland but it has it's own small town charm. I felt at home even though I'd never been to the South before. And I certainly can't be called a redneck. I drive a compact car, have never shot a gun, hate fishing, and never had a mullet, crewcut, etc.

2. The traditions are dumb. True, some people really get into them but the vast majority don't really care. I was never once yelled at for something I did or didn't do.

3. Cops have nothing better to do than write tickets for dumb crap? Sure, I've heard the stories. I never once got pulled over, ticketed, or even really interacted with the police. Neither did anyone I personally knew.

4. AustinChief - I don't regret attending A&M. So now you know one person that doesn't regret it. And I would never attend UT.

I'm sure there will be more. Flame away.

Oh the one thing they actually do a lot is say Howdy instead of hi, hello, hey. It's kind of annoying but I lasted and didn't pick up that habit.

The University of Arkansas suffers from the same "rich and spoiled" syndrome. The irony is that many of the douchebags that suffer from this syndrome hail from the Dallas/Ft. Worth area. When I became more aware of this situation some years ago, I further cemented my dislike of Dallas, and Texas in general.

That's a fair assessment overall.

What you didn't address is what College Station has to OFFER... which is really nothing. That is my biggest complaint. You may as well live in a city like Temple or Waco... also towns with ZERO to offer.

And you don't count, you went there for grad school... you have to admit that is a TOTALLY different experience than undergrad.

College Station is a giant cult. Been there for a college event and when I left, I made a promise to myself to never go back.

In all seriousness we'll thoroughly check out more than one college, A&M is the place she likes best right now and for the last year or so and she's one of those rare kids that knows what she wants and sticks to it more than most kids and many adults, including me to be honest. If A&M ends up being right for her we'll go forth with all guns firing. I said it about 46 times now but I really appreciate all the info I've gotten here from all sides.

She's 15 and decided she wanted to be a marine biologist when she was about 4. You think well that's nice but it'll change but in her case it hasn't in the least, she just gotten more passionate about it over time. She's been a certified scuba diver since age 11 and has assisted the instructor that taught her in classes for adults. I know I'm just bragging but she's a remarkable kid. Anymore if she says this is what she wants to do I take it seriously and learn everything I can. Hence this thread.

Yeah it's a college town...it's a nice stop for a few years but not somewhere I'd really settle down.

It's laidback. Some people are looking for that kind of thing.

And you're right, grad school is different from undergrad. I still spent 70-90 hours a week on campus though. I used the school gym nearly every day, tailgated and attended every football game. I immersed some but not as much as you would living in the dorms.

Completely understandable. Sounds like a great kid.

I'm sure she'll end up finding the right place for her. Also, with marine biology, she'll be spending a lot more time in classes, studying, traveling to the coast than most of her classmates. The town of her college may not matter as much really.

One of my good friends went to some small school down in the Florida Keys for marine biology and he raves about his experiences there. Lots and lots of hands on field work (like he spent several weeks sailing around with his classmates and professor as part of their class). I can't remember the name of the school but you might already be familiar. I can find out though.
