"Official" 2011 St. Louis Cardinals Thread

This is so unreal. We were dead. No hope. A season over. Somehow, someway we find some team chemistry and squeak into the playoffs on the last day of the season.

Only to find us facing one of the best pitching staffs assembled in years with home field advantage. We somehow, someway find a way to beat the best pitcher in baseball on the road in an elimination game.

We have to go on the road and beat the team with the best home record in baseball. A team who mortgaged their future to make this run .We somehow, someway find a way to beat them on the road and make our 18th World series trip.

We take game 1, we give away game 2 and home field advantage. Albert goes off for probably the best performance in World Series history and we take game 3 easily. Games 4 & 5 our bats fall asleep, Phone gate happens and its not looking too good.

Game 6, one of the best baseball games of all time and it takes place in a season ending go home game. Cardinals are down 2 runs in their final chance on the season, twice. They are down to their final strike of the season, twice. They give up a 2 run homer in extra innings. In the bottom of the inning their final 3 batters are a combined 3-26 in the Playoffs and a pitcher because the bench is empty. Somehow, someway they get some runners on and the comeback player of the year drives in the tying run. Mr. Freese hits the walk off home run. We will see you tommorrow night.

Game 7, With our bulldog on the mound pitching on 3 days rest he is able to give us 6 good innings and get us to within 9 outs of our 11 World series title. Texas meltsdown, probably left over from last nights game and its over.

The underdog, come back team who had no business even being in the playoffs wins a World championship. They make movies about events like this in life. Events that you remember even if your not a fan of the sport or team for the rest of your life.

When it is your team.......Priceless

Mo trading Rasmus is on Larussa's head not Mo's.

After all of TLR's comments, it was untennable for Rasmus to stay.

And Rolen. And Ludwick. And Ryan.

How 'bout you ditch that jackass that keeps making things 'untenable' for talented ballplayers?

Oh, and for what it's worth, Rasmus still had options available. The Marlins just sent Logan Morrison to AAA to give him time away from the major league club, why not do the same with Rasmus? It's not like we actually got anything back for him. The White Sox traded Jackson for Frasor and someone's willingness to take on Teahen's deal: that was Jackson's trade value. We just got Rhodes for free, who's about as useful against lefties as Scrabble. And Dotel/Patterson are, at best, replacement level.

We literally gave Colby Rasmus away - why not send him to AAA until this LaRussa problem reaches its merciful end?

I agree. Those are on Larussa, not Mo.

I don't think we have any Card fans on here that think Larussa is doing a great job.

My only concern is that you see clubs make a move on a manger and it gets worse, not better.

Um, the Ludwick trade isn't bad.

They spent the same amount of money on Berkman. You can complain about the money Mo gave to Westbrook, but I'd say the trade is fairly even.

But you can bitch about the Ryan and Rasmus trades.

Edited to add: The White Sox got Frasor and Stewart in return for Jackson.

Yeah, but Gregerson as a throw in and $20 mil/season for your 4th and 5th starters is on Moe.

There's plenty of shit to pile around Moe's ankles as well. At his very best, he's a below average general manager. At worst, he's one of the 5 worst in baseball. I'm inclined to put him closer to the latter than the former.

Again, I don't see how you can blame Mo for those deals. His hand was forced by Larussa. His bargaining position undercut by Larussa's actions and public words. Teams knew Mo had to move the players regardless of the price.

The problem isn't that. If Mo had any balls, he could've told LaRussa to shut up and not talk about it.

I also believe Mo could have gotten a better deal. The question is who would have offered it.

They spent a couple million more to get Berkman, in fact.

And to get Jake !@#$ing Westbrook in return for Ryan Ludwick when you were in the middle of a playoff drive was pathetic. You'll note that Ludwick drove in the game winning run that put us a game ahead of the Reds last July - he was traded that night and the team immediately collapsed.

Even if you want to view the trade for how it worked out this year - it absolutely destroyed the team last season.

And you're right, the Chisox also got Zach Stewart - a 25 yr old reliever with marginal upside that hasn't been a regular starter since AA. He's essentially PJ Walters - huzzah.

We gave up Colby Rasmus - again, a 24 yr old CFer that led the position in OPS at 23 yrs old - for a player that the Blue Jays gave up the equivalent of Mitchell Boggs and PJ Walters for.

Fantastic work, Moe.
