Stealing some mojo from another thread, I was curious as to who here has built theiir own computer? If you do, would you mind sharing what hardware/software you're using and what you primarily use the computer for (gaming, home office, etc)?

Also, links would be greatly appreciated to the hardware parts, but if you're too lazy, it's all good. I'm going to start building my own system, and I'm looking for some advice.

AMD's new 4+ GHz (slot AM3+) 6 and 8-core processors are hitting the shelves in October. Also, PCI-E 3.0 video cards are going to be coming out soon (Radeon HD 7000 series). I need a new desktop, but have decide to wait until the end of the year to see what develops. It will be interesting to see what the prices will be on this new stuff. I expect with the economy the way it is, that the initial pricing might not nearly be as high as in years past with new tech, but we will see.

Pants, have you seen anything on price ranges for PCI-E 3.0 or the new AMD cards. I have not looked around for any articles on the new stuff yet.

Yeah, the new AMD FX series (AM3+ slot) processors will be in the $300 range (compared to the current $150). I'm not sure on the new 7000's Radeons, but I'm assuming it will go from $250 all the way to $700+ depending on what you want.

They're not going to be lowering the price of new technology just because the economy is struggling. It's going to be pretty expensive.

Advice/ recommendations/ comments are welcome. This is my first build and would likely have to last awhile. Gaming, dvds, casual use mostly.

I'll 2nd this. I've had much better experience with the Radeon cards as of late. I think the picture quality, drivers, and performance is better that the NVidia counterpart.
