Riley Reiff is one of the top OL prospects in the draft and could be a top 10 pick

This is my preliminary 2012 NFL Mock Draft for Kansas City Chiefs. I asked Patrick Allen at arrowheadaddict which picks the Chiefs had and he told me they had all of their picks, and the extra one they got for moving down was last year so that’s what I’m going with (though he did say I think). If you know different, let me know.

I’m going assume the Chiefs are picking around 7th:

1st round Riley Reiff, OT, Iowa Hawkeyes

Offensive line or quarterback seems likely here. The problem I have with going quarterback is at this point I’m not sure if the Chiefs have given up on Matt Cassel yet or not. If I knew that this mock would be easier. I’m going to assume that they have NOT given up on Cassel as their franchise quarterback and because they drafted a QB early on last year, I’m going to avoid quarterback altogether.

With that being said Riley Reiff is a nice tackle prospect in a fairly top heavy OT class. Reiff or Jonathan Martin are the most likely tackles to be drafted after USC’s Matt Kalil. Reiff has the athleticism and range to be a very effective LT at the N.F.L., though he has the potential to be an All-pro kind of right tackle. Either way, the selection of Reiff instantly improve the Chiefs offensive line.

2nd round: Vinny Curry, OLB, Marshall

Curry is a bit of a conversion project, but one heck of an athlete. The Chiefs need linebackers to play with Tamba Hali if they want to take their game to the next level. Curry can really rush the passer and will eventually develop into a solid pass coverage guy. He’s also pretty good value near the top of round two.

3rd Round: Doug Martin, RB, Boise State

I thought the Chiefs should consider Mark Ingram last year, and I think they should consider Trent Richardson this year. Jamaal Charles is a S-T-U-D, but Thomas Jones is near the end of the career, Dexter McCluster is a gimmick player and Jackie Battle is ok. Martin is a solid all around running back that could be an excellent complement to Charles. This team is at it’s best when the running game is cruising. With Martin the Chiefs would have a really nice group of young players on offense: Bowe, Charles, Moeaki, Baldwin, Charles, Martin. Not bad.

4th Round: Trevor Guyton, DL, California

One of my favorite not-talked about enough players. Guyton has experience in the 34 already and is a guy who is an excellent hustle player and makes plays. He impacts games more than his stat sheet indicates (though his stat sheet is not barren). Casual draft fans don’t really discuss him, but he’s the kind of player N.F.L. teams fall in love with and I wouldn’t be surprised at all if he end up in the lower part of the second round when all is said and done.

5th Round: Josh Chichester, TE, Louisville

Chichester is an intriguing tight end weapon and Red-zone threat. He’s built like a pole, tall lanky and wiry. He’s a pretty good athlete too. He’s not a blocker, he’s a receiving tight end.

6th Round: Janzen Jackson, S, Mcneesee State

Prior to last year I wouldn’t mock Jackson to the Chiefs because he comes with some serious baggage, but in the 6th round that’s not a big issue. Jackson was dismissed from the Volunteers, but if he had been able to stay out of trouble and build on last season he could have made a push for the first round. He’s very talented, I’d be lying if I’ve seen him play at McNeese State so the pre-draft process bears watching for this talented often forgot about prospect.

7th Round: Jermaine Kearse, WR, Washington Huskies

This is a value pick. Kearse has a lot of ability and could go much higher than this. In my Buffalo Bills team mock I had him going in the 5th round (I believe, maybe 4th). But there are always players who fall through the cracks and if Kearse is one the Chiefs should pounce on him. You can never have too many wide receives in this league.

Without even knowing much about most of the players on this list, I ****ing hate this draft passed round 1.

There's no need for the Chiefs to be picking so high on a RB. If they even want to look at RB at all in the draft, I'd be looking at someone like Tauren Poole. He had a nice 2010 season and he's going to be a late round pick because he hasn't been so hot this year due to a hamstring injury.

This is why people who don't follow the Chiefs should not do mock drafts for us. Another OT? What is this like 5 years running now? We drafted a QB early? So the 5th round is considered early? He then wants us to use our second rounder on a "project"? After reading those two I didn't bother reading anymore as it could only get worse from here.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with a 3rd rnd running back. Get real dude. Right now, there is complete uncertainty at the position. Battle is probably the least explosive back in the league and Charles is coming off an ACL surgery.

If there were a position of "need" on this team, it's at RB.

I cannot argue that. I really hope that Charles can rebound, but most players can't. But unless you have a guy like Charles, a RB is only as good as his o-line unless you get a special running back.
