Sunglasses buying philosophy

I'm getting old, and I love it, mostly.

Never been a sunglasses wearer, thus never been a sunglasses buyer.

Don't know where I'll land. I am sunglasses-agnostic.

Which are you? Why?

I need to buy some nice ones because I have very light sensitive eyes and I enjoy the outdoors but I have just never been able to pull the trigger on them. Now that I write this I am kind of thinking I need to finally get some.

I bought a nice pair of Maui Jim's ($200 big ones) five years ago. About three years ago one of the ear pieces broke. I mailed them to the company and they sent me a new pair for free no questions asked.

Big into Oakley's myself. With all the bargain/deal websites out there you can easily score a pair for $50-100.

Now, I might actually plunk down the money for a set of those.
When Oakley quit honoring their lifetime warranty they removed the only reason I was willing to pay >$100 for a pair of sunglasses.

I've rarely ever owned sunglasses. I've bought a few cheap pairs in my lifetime, but I lose them or break them pretty quick.

If any of you have a Discover card and collect the rewards points, you can get $30 gift certificates to Sunglass hut for $20 in Discover dollars. You can buy as many of them as you want. My wife bought 6 of them so she could get her Maui Jim's.

It helps a ton to be able to try them on/see them in person and buying them from an actual shop helps if you need to get them repaired. Doing it this way essentially gets you the sunglasses for 33% off and it gives you a shop to go to for maintenance work. You can also use coupons or discounts should you happen to find them to help defray even more costs.

Just a suggestion to the Discover cardholders out there.

Here in Arizona you wear shades most of your life. There is no such thing as "too good" a pair of sunglasses.

My midrange is Aqua East sunglasses. About $20-$25 but sturdy as heck. Only reason I've had to buy more than one is because I lost my other 2 like a dummy. 3rd pair still going strong after more than 2 years. Just need new croakies.

Yes, comfort matters. So does lens quality. Style is good too.

Got a buddy that’s a Journyman Electrician and when he was working the high power lines he wore mostly Oakleys telling me, “If you’re going to spend all day in them they’ve got to be comfortable.”

It has much more to do with the quality of optics than the weight. And there can be a huge difference in the quality of optics between the cheapies and the good ones that make them worth the money. I have a small head. All the cheap sunglasses don't have enough of an angle to properly cover my peripheral vision. And any that do have the correct angle, look absolutely horrible and warped when looking through the part of the glass that bends. The more expensive glasses have the same optical clarity despite the bend in the glass. The cheaper glasses also use more shading than actual UV blocking, because it's so much cheaper. They just make them darker instead of making them clear while also blocking UV. Good quality glasses aren't necessarily "dark" when you look through them. They should be clear enough to see fine even in low light, yet block 100% of UV rays.

Some people will pay a ridiculous amount just for a brand.
