Sporting KC's Bunbury philosophical about sideline spell
KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The year began with Teal Bunbury making two starts for the US national team. First Kick found him No. 1 on the depth chart at center forward for Sporting Kansas City. Just after that, he headed off to join the US Under-23s for Olympic qualifying. This week, he could be found playing a full 90 in a Reserve League match, with no London trip booked for the summer after the US failed to qualify – and still looking for his first goal of the year in any competition and his first league start since that opening game. But if Bunbury is frustrated by his early lack of production – and by C.J. Sapong’s move into the regular starter’s spot – he isn’t showing it. “I’m doing fine,” he told MLSsoccer.com on Tuesday, after coming close on several chances in a 1-0 reserves loss to Colorado. “I can only do things that I can control: training, working hard and all that. It’s team first. It’s not all about me. I go and I put the work in. I know it’s a long season and things happen. So I’m very thankful that I have this opportunity. I’m not going to let it go to waste.” Manager Peter Vermes is taking a similar long view. Bunbury’s start with the reserves was neither a demotion nor an attempt to give the young forward a chance to build confidence against backup opposition, Vermes said Tuesday. “I’m not concerned whether he can score or not,” Vermes said. “He’s just got to keep his 90-minute fitness going. I’ve said all along that we’re going to need guys on this team to step up throughout the entire season. We’re not even a third of the way through yet, so we have a lot of games to play.” And if 2011 was any indication, Bunbury could hit a hot streak at any time. Of his nine regular-season goals, which tied him for team-high honors, four came in the last seven games of Sporting’s push to the top of the Eastern Conference standings. He added two more in the postseason, helping SKC reach the conference championship game before they fell 2-0 to Houston. “Goalscorers,” Vermes said. “They’re kind of like that. They’re streaky guys. Listen, I know he can hit the net. That part I’m not concerned about. I know he’ll get opportunities, and he’ll wind up finishing them.” That’s the plan, according to Bunbury. “When I get my opportunities, I’m just trying to do the best that I can,” he said. “Obviously, as a forward I want to score goals. The more minutes I play, the more goals I can score. That’s my mindset.” |

There’s never a good time for a starter to go down with an injury, but Sporting Kansas City’s bye week means that the club won’t have to do without left back Seth Sinovic for too many games.
Sinovic underwent successful surgery on Tuesday for a fractured right hand, sustained in Saturday’s 1-0 loss at Portland – the first defeat of the year for Sporting KC (7-1-0). He is expected to miss no more than two weeks, the team said Wednesday, and Kansas City don’t play again until they host the expansion Montreal Impact on May 5. Even before the team announced the injury, manager Peter Vermes said former starter Michael Harrington had been playing well enough in training and reserve matches to earn a spot start on the backline. “Mikey’s been working hard and pushing the envelope like crazy,” Vermes said Tuesday night, after Harrington turned in a 90-minute effort in a 1-0 Reserve League loss to Colorado. “That makes the other guys in there better.” Sinovic has not been out of Vermes’ first XI since making his Sporting debut last June, starting the last 20 matches of the regular season and all three of Sporting’s playoff games. He has played all but one minute in of the club’s first eight matches this year, taking a bigger role in the offense with the arrival of veteran left winger Bobby Convey, and earned his first career assist in a 3-0 rout of New England in Sporting’s home opener. Harrington, in his sixth year with Kansas City, has 119 career starts in 139 appearances but lost his first-team berth after 16 starts in 2011. He came into camp looking to contend for playing time, but his only appearance this year was a 1-minute stint in relief of Sinovic in the loss to the Timbers. Kronberg coming back slowly Eric Kronberg’s 2012 season is turning into a study in patience. Sporting Kansas City’s longtime backup goalkeeper had hoped to be back at full strength by now, but still hasn’t returned to a full training schedule because of a lower back injury sustained in the preseason. “I’ve kind of gotten back into warming up with the goalkeepers, just this week,” Kronberg told MLSsoccer.com on Tuesday. “I’m taking it easy. It’s a pretty serious injury and we don’t want to rush it.” Kronberg was originally expected to be out four to six weeks with the bulging disk, which first manifested as shooting pains down his legs. Although Kronberg said it doesn’t hurt right now until he pushes himself too far, Vermes said the condition was serious enough that the goalkeeper’s recovery needs to happen at a slower pace. “We don’t want to rush him back and waste all the time we just spent leaving him out,” Vermes said on Tuesday. “So we want to make sure when we bring him back, that it’s a slow process and he’s fully fit again. It’s more precautionary than anything else.” http://www.sportingkc.com/news/2012/...-kronberg-mend |

Off day for Sporting but some good games going on around the league.
Thierry Henry had a real nice goal as NYRB beat NE today. 27CDB6E-AE6D-11cf-96B8-444553540000"> However he had a muscle type injury that seems to be serious enough to have him out for a few weeks. NY has been murdered with injuries. Montreal beat Portland 2-0. SJ and Philly should have a pretty good game as well as DC v HOU and CHI v SEA |

They linked together for a gorgeous goal, conceded one ~10 minutes later, and then scored an 89th or so minute winner that was called offside even though Opara was obviously behind Lenhart when the pass was made. Two minutes into stoppage time Lenhart scored his second goal and the Philly fans got really quiet. Such a satisfying match and three more road points.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Michael Harrington has caught the break he wanted. Not in the way he had hoped, perhaps, but that won’t stop him from making the most of his first start since mid-2011 for Sporting Kansas City. Harrington will start at left back in Saturday’s home game against Montreal, after Seth Sinovic underwent surgery last week to repair a broken right hand sustained in the previous weekend’s 1-0 loss at Portland. “It feels great,” Harrington told MLSsoccer.com after Tuesday’s training session. “This is an exciting week for me.” Harrington’s struggles last season, when he fell out of the starting lineup after 16 matches, drove him to a renewed commitment to the game over the winter break. “I had the offseason to take off and kind of refocus, make a fresh start and just kind of start over with a good work ethic and a good mentality coming in,” Harrington said. “I knew that the team would probably be the team that did so well from the end of the season last year, so I just kind of came in, didn’t put too much pressure on myself and just tried to keep a really good mentality, kind of hoping this day would come.” Now that it has, manager Peter Vermes said, he has no qualms at all about starting Harrington. “I’ve got to give Michael a lot of credit,” Vermes said. “What he’s done is, he’s worked very, very, hard all throughout preseason and up until now. He’s been fantastic. That work has been as much mental as physical. “I think Michael has matured a lot, knowing that a lot of things can happen over the course of the season,”Vermes added. “The one thing you have to make sure of from a player’s point of view is that when you get your opportunity, you’re ready. I think Michael’s attitude has been great, and I do think he’s ready.” That’s the key for any reserve hoping to step up, Harrington said. “It’s a long season, so the guys that are on the fringe of the starting XI need to be ready,” he said. “I’ve stayed ready, and my chance is on Saturday.” Sinovic, who did some passing drills with the club early in Tuesday’s training session, also expressed confidence in his replacement. “Obviously, Mikey’s a very good player,” Sinovic said. “He’s been a starter for the first four, five years of his career. So he’s got tons of experience. We’ve been saying since the beginning of the year that we’ve got tons of depth, so I don’t think we’ll miss a beat.” Harrington had similar praise for Sinovic, who has emerged as a significant contributor in all three parts of the field in Sporting’s 7-1-0 start. “Seth’s a really technical player, a great passer of the ball,” Harrington said. “I hope I will bring some attacking impetus to the game. Seth’s done a good job of giving service, and hopefully I can get up there and do the same.” |

Definitely excited to see the team back in action. Also, one of my basketball teams has moved from Tuesdays to Thursdays for next session.. So hopefully I can make it to a reserve league match or two, since it seems like they are always Tuesday nights.
That was a good little article on Teal. Seems like he has his head on straight. I think he gets a lot of unfair criticism.. He's still really young, and super talented. Other teams would jump at the chance to have him on their roster. |
