2012 Kansas City Royals Repository Thread

2012 Slogan: Our Time

A better, more accurate 2012 Slogan: It is Finally Next Year
(from Great Expectations)

An alternative slogan if you don't like that one: Someone has to win this crappy division
(from alnorth)

With the beginning of a new year, it is time for the 2012 version of the Royals Repository Thread. We've got Hosmer, we've got a 2011-dominating Gordon, we've got Moose, we've got hopefully a killer bullpen, we've got a stereotypical slow slugging DH, we've got easily one of the best defensive shortstops in the AL, we've got a promising catcher in Salvador Perez. Hell, we've got offense and promising prospects galore.

We do not have starting pitching.

Oh yeah, we've also got this:

Get ready for, (as of January 2012 anyway), one of the most confusing puzzles of a baseball season in recent Royals history. Will they suck? Maybe, I don't know. Will we be given a year of 0.500 baseball? Possibly, I don't know. Will they win the division and go to the playoffs for the first time in 27 years? For the first time in a long time, it could happen, I don't know. 92 losses, 92 wins, or anything in between would not surprise a lot of us.

Everything goes here except Gameday threads and really big news. If a giant story breaks, the Royals achieve some awesome milestone, or we sign/lose a highly significant player/coach/mascot/whatever, then it might also deserve its own thread. This being Chiefs Planet, please do not clutter the board with new threads about trivial Royals news or you will only annoy those who come here for just Chiefs football. If you aren't sure and its not a Gameday thread, it goes here.

What sort of stuff often goes here? SPchief explained it well, so I'll just copy that:

Quote:
If you locate something of interest.. ANYTHING.. deals on apparel, best ways in/out of the stadium, giveaways, great stories from this season or from seasons gone by, rumors, trades, anything.... feel free to post it here.

How are they ever going to afford to pay Hos, Moose, and Myers if they all become studs?

The problem is... you'd have to find somebody willing to roll the dice on him.

It's similar to Gordon before last year. He's a tradeable piece, but your return is not good enough to risk him figuring it out and putting the tools together.

As for John Lamb, who was mentioned earlier... here's a great piece on his rehab from PineTarPress.

I'm all for stocking the farm system with pitching prospects and moving them when appropriate, for more ML-ready pitching.

IF the Royals were smart, they'd move some sort of trade package around to get someone like Garza/Josh Johnson. The package I suggested earlier might work there. As long as the names Myers (untouchable) or Montgomery (trade value is too depressed to make trading him worth it at this time) aren't involved, it's good.

You can move Odorizzi, but it sure as hell better be for a guy who is already established at the MLB level at around Odo's upside. And for somebody you either: 1) Control for 3-4 years; 2) Are confident you can sign to an extension/long-term deal.
Couldn't agree with you more. realistically this team is going to have to sign a FA or 2, try and develop some of our pitching and then continue to take high upside flyers via trade (ie Paulino, Sanchez, Mazarro (kinda)).

If we get to a point where our position players are stacked, then you can trade a guy like Wil Myers for a pitcher, at this point in time we just aren't sure enough about RF & CF moving forward to trade a guy who is raking like he is.

Garza would be a great option. Durable as hell (around 200 IP last four years), young, and solid stuff.

If possible, keep Odo and put together any reasonable package of young arms--I'm talking legit. prospects, not a bullshit Madden trade--to get the deal done. As much as we joke, a guy like Dyson might be a nice complimentary piece in such a package.

I think if you offered the Cubs:

Yordano Ventura
Chris Dwyer
David Lough/Johnny Giavotella
Jarrod Dyson

That might be a package that can net Garza. A young pitcher with high, TOR upside in Ventura (who is 2-3 years away)
Dwyer is another high upside good who has No. 2 starter potential, and at worst is a solid bullpen weapon
Lough/Gio are both solid players who can contribute at a league-average level (at least) for you.
Dyson is a good complementary piece, especially in the NL, where his speed is more useful game-to-game (Even if not starting).

If they want someone who can close, you can offer them one guy from a plethora of young, closer types in Herrera/Holland/Coleman.

Theo is rebuidling. Garza trade makes sense.

No Collins, Holland, Herrera, or Broxton tonight. Although, Ned did say Collins and Holland could play outfield if needed. Getz to the 15 day DL. Sanchez needs to eat some innings tonight.

Given that he's a FA in '14, I think it's a given that he's moved before the deadline. If the Royals were to get in on it, we'd have to have some level of confidence in re-signing him.

Unless something drastic happens, they in no way shape or form should be buyers if it means giving up any useful prospects below age 26. This SP is too abysmal. Maybe they should just plan on doing bullpen by committee and forgetting SP

I think he's going to have to whether he pitches well or not.

I would make that trade, particularly if they take Lough instead of Gio. I'm not sure Garza is much more than a 2/3 pitcher, though.
