If a guy wants to go somewhere else to play, either pay him enough to stay with you or let him walk.
The team might be willing to pay the player though but the player might just want to play somewhere else.

With the tag, at least teams can hold onto a player for a year or two until the player caves and decides to sign long term or until they can get something in a trade.

Could you imagine how crushed you would be as a fan if the Chiefs drafted a QBOTF and then he just walked away in FA?

I just don't think you should be able to hold a player like that against his will. It would suck to lose players like that, but I think it would put somewhat more pressure on teams to win and put forth more effort in retaining players not just knowing you can slap the tag on someone.
