Ricky Stanzi No. 2 QB Against Rams

Ricky Stanzi Will Be The Chiefs No. 2 QB Against The Rams
by Joel Thorman on Aug 15, 2012 12:33 PM CDT in Chiefs Training Camp

John Rieger-US PRESSWIRE - PresswireMore photos »
It's official: Ricky Stanzi will be the No. 2 quarterback in the Kansas City Chiefs second preseason game against the St. Louis Rams. Not the No. 2 for the entire season; just for this game. I said earlier today that I wouldn't be surprised if Stanzi gets the nod simply for the sake of giving him a fair chance with the second team.

Stanzi and Brady Quinn are battling for the No. 2 job and throughout camp there isn't a clear leader. Most would say Quinn has been better but it's not like he's lighting the world on fire.

As the KC Star's Adam Teicher notes, the fact that Stanzi gets the nod as the No. 2 in Saturday's game shows that this thing isn't over. Stanzi still has a shot. Maybe not a great one but still a shot.

Danny Parkins made a good point on 610 Sports today about this. Stanzi hasn't been given many opportunities to work with the second team in game action. If this is a true competition then Stanzi deserves time with the second team to show what he can do with better talent.

Put this one on your checklist for Saturday night. We'll be watching the backup battle closely.

You dont know shit about what Pioli is going to do with any player let alone Stanzi. You are basing your smack on your assumption and speculation, knowing there is a good chance Stanzi comes back for 1-2 more years...

But calling someone out about having inside knowledge, then running your cock holster like you are "in the know" is pretty damn funny.
You are right I don't have insider knowledge, but I also didn't say that I did you dumb shit. Learn how to read. Based on the fact that Matt Cassel sucks the penis and is still here, it is pretty easy to see that Stanzi will also be here for another few years since he is also Pioli's guy. If you don't think so, fine, but I do.

What is it with some of you guys and your fascination with dicks?

It varies depending upon the intent of the appearance. As a general rule, though, a 3rd string QB going 2 of 7 and displaying questionable decision making skills while throwing inaccurately in the first preseason game of the season is not going to be considered to have played well.

He's got 3 games to show improvement, and I wish him well.

Stanzi is a 5th round pick. Pioli would not hesitate to cut him if need be.

C'mon, the Stanzi unseating Cassel without injury nonsense, when the consensus here in KC is Stanzi (and Quinn) are well behind Cassel as potentially leading this team. The beat-into-the-ground breakdown of a handful of passes in pre-season by 2 guys that hopefully won't see the field this year. The [insert fantasy stat line] if X and Y were to happen.

Most all have 0 faith in Cassel, most all have hope for the kid and want him to succeed, but most realize that Stanzi's realistic expectations are to solidify the #2 spot and get himself ready to play if Cassel goes down.

The Stanzi backlash is homer driven.

But what need would that be? Even if Stanzi shits himself the next 3 games will KC really cut him in hopes of improving the #3 QB spot? With the talk of Pioli loving Cassel it gets overlooked how much Pioli would want Stanzi to do well. He comes from a college coach Pioli loves and is Pioli's only QB drafted on this team. He is most likely going to give the guy a long shot.

As for the Stanzi hate and love, its nice to see this board reaching the grey area that life and sports normally exist in. There is a reason most black vs. white arguements(not races) never lead to any conclusion, cause both sides usually both have major holes. Stanzi is a rough talent, has a lot to learn. Last year with a shortened offseason and 3rd string reps, exactly how much work did he get. To me the whole him not beating out Palko has so many issues to break down that it can't really even be said. As for this year, even if he does struggle that doesn't mean he can't improve. Is 1.5 offseasons the line for when a QB is capable of either being good or not? On the other side of the coin, the twisting that some of the Stanzi supporters do to build up their side is getting a little out of hand. I don't think the WR did anything wrong on the Stanzi throw, the guy got pushed out of bounds. Good pass, good play by the defender.

I want Stanzi to do well, I have hope, even if its all due to my dislike of Cassel. That being said, we have not seen enough to say anything else than "I have hope". Cause evidence isn't there yet. Taking shots down field or seeming to look good in the pocket is hardly court room material. The reality is, as some have mentioned, we don't know.

If people want to say that his odds aren't good and therefore they doubt it how can you argue with that. At that same time, if people want to hold on to hope and think what they have seen may turn out to be something, its a little harsh to not let them have that. But saying there is evidence yet of anything implies TV views with no idea what the plays or reads are is a little twisted. Yes he has played with #3's, but he is also playing against #3's. We just don't know. The one thing I am most confident about is this, he will be on the roster.

I don't hold 2011 against him. It's clear that Pioli didn't/doesn't want to put him out on the field until he's absolutely ready. Palko was Haley's pet as much as Cassel is Pioli's. And then we claimed Orton. Although, if Stanzi is still #3 come week 1 then I'll have to write him off. He'll likely be a career backup and probably wont get an extension in KC.

That's fair. I personally would give him another offseason before I write him off completely(save for a clearly terrible performance this preseason), but if he can't beat out Quinn, his odds of ever being a starter drop a considerable amount.

I think IF Pioli literally does believe that Stanzi is a "potential future NFL starter" as he stated, then I think he is going to bring him along very carefully. For one, I think Stanzi is the type of guy that will develop at a potentially slower pace than your Andrew Luck types. Stanzi fans (me being one of them) have to be very patient with this guy's development. Also, I think Pioli has probably caught on to how quickly this fanbase is to turn on a QB when they aren't performing well. I think this fanbase is quicker than others to be that way because we are so damned starved for a franchise QB and tired of the QB bullshit. IF Stanzi does show potential of succeeding at the QB position, I think Pioli is going to wait until; 1.) he has to put him in due to injury of QB's ahead of him on depth chart or 2.) He is 100% absolutely sure he is ready to go to avoid understandable cynicism from the fanbase. If Stanzi starts and is doing shitty....the general outlook from the fanbase of him being a shitty QB, may become quickly irreversible due to us being so starved for "the guy." I guess Trent Green was an exception to this, but I think the fanbase is at it's skepticism and cynicism peak right now... I am guilty of this to a fault. If Cassel shows great improvement in 2012, I will not be convinced that the improvement was Matt Cassel, even if he literally did improve. I will give credit to his weapons because I have seen just how limited this man is in so many different areas. My perception of the guy is irreversible, which is unfortunate.

After all these tweets through OTA's and training camp. From Babb's admitted pre-training camp excitement of seeing Stanzi because he was the best QB he saw at the OTA's to reports of Stanzi at OTA's throwing balls in the dirt. From Mr. Happy, Lance Twidwell's obvious Stanzi-love (with really no explanation why he was loving on him so much) to Fescoe's apparent Stanzi-hate. From a report from someone saying that you can't tell the difference between Stanzi and Trick Shot by watching them play to Cordell aka formerdb, endorsing Stanzi compared to Cassel and Quinn and explaining in "tweet-depth" why Stanzi received his endorsement. Can't forget Nick Jacobs's seemingly fair and balanced tweets. Out of all of them, one of my favorites regarding Stanzi was a tweet by the WR he threw to in college:

DJK ‏@DJKoulianos
One Of The Most Exciting Moments In Sports Will Be When @AdamSchefter Announces Ricky Stanzi Has Been Named Kansas City's Starting QB

Maybe it's an Iowa pride thing. Maybe their friends. Maybe both. Many people have made the comment that they think a lot of Stanzi's success in college was a reflection of not Stanzi, but the talent he had surrounding him...the tools he had to work with. It is encouraging to see that Stanzi's own WR appears to have respect for him as a QB. If he felt Stanzi was a factor that held him back from accomplishing more than he could have, then I wouldn't expect a tweet like that from him, unless it is, as mentioned Iowa pride or endorsement of a personal friend despite any questions he may have in terms of his ability.

I realize that college and the NFL are on 2 totally different wavelengths, but I am pretty certain that we will never see a tweet from Dwayne Bowe where he is endorsing Cassel when they are no longer teammates. Just a hunch.

Then again, to my understanding, Larry Fitzgerald had some nice things to say about Palko on the radio last year.....so who knows?

I just thought it was an interesting tweet that may have been over-looked a bit by the non-Iowans who don't even know who DJK is.
