Replacement Refs Have To Go

Some of the calls I've been seeing on the pre-season games are almost impossible to describe, let alone explain. Guys holding themselves. Punts that are downed 5 yards from the endzone and then ruled as touchbacks. Just amazing stuff.

I really hope the NFL comes to their senses before the real season starts...

It gotten to a pathetic point. It wasn't just the crew for the Chiefs game. It's every crew.

They don't know the rules. The don't know which teams are playing and sometimes what city they're in. They aren't consistent with their calls. They sound unintelligent during their explanations. As much as I disliked the original refs, these guys are truly worse. Worse than I could've imagined.

I just wish they would get their calls in quickly and get the game rolling. They have really slowed down the pace of the games.

They changed the dynamic and momentum of last nights game for us with those two awful calls on Tamba during that drive-neither one was close. After that series, we never had any positive mojo

The 2nd roughing call on Hali was atrocious.

He was blatantly held. Around the neck, no less.

That wasn't the first time. I saw him held like that 3-4 times. It's like Okung had the strangle hold and it looked like professional wrestling. I hope that is all over Sportscenter today. The league needs the real refs or someone is going to get hurt bad out there.

That happens every game now. He should just get used to it at this point.

It's bad but if you give them a years time you won't see a difference IMO. The refs on strike overrate their importance to the game. Hell Hochuli is an egomaniac who thinks he's bigger than the game itself.

Why the hell would we want to give them a year?

Completely agree.

Also agree they deserve to be compensated.

Pay them well and when they make huge errors (not small 1/2 second judgement calls but apologies to the team afterwards type screw ups) fine the $3it out of them...

Kluwe wants NFL to give replacements the boot

Posted by Mike Florio on August 25, 2012, 9:26 AM EDT

We’ve been saying that players should start speaking up about the replacement officials. After Friday night’s Chargers-Vikings game, punter Chris Kluwe did.

Without using a whiteboard. (Yet.)

“The NFL really needs to kiss and make up with the refs,” Kluwe said on Twitter. “These replacements are horrible. Frankly, it’s kind of embarrassing.”

Again, if we accept that the NFL has hired the best of the best officials to serve as the collective crew that is now locked out, the NFL necessarily is using something less than the best of the best now.

“I’m sure they’re trying hard, but they’re just not good,” Kluwe said. “So many blown calls tonight in both directions.”

The game included an obvious fumble by Vikings running back Lex Hilliard that wasn’t called a fumble and an obvious interception by Chargers defensive back DeAndrew Pressley that wasn’t called an interception. In both cases, Chargers coach Norv Turner had to throw the red flag. In both cases, the call on the field was overturned.

Turner bit his tongue after the game. Kluwe didn’t. And while the NFL can fine coaches who pop off about the replacements, players can say whatever they want.

More should. Whether you’re as concerned for your safety as NFLPA executive director DeMaurice Smith says you should be or whether you’re concerned that games will be decided by something other than the play on the field, stand up and speak up.

Not only did they miss the blatant and I mean blatant holds on Hali, the 2nd PF and the PI were just ****ing horrible. The first PF against Hali was very ify but he did take 2 steps after they guy got rid of the ball. Nonetheless it totally ****ed that drive and I think our defensive starters were like "WTF is the point?"

I am not certain of the exact figure, but a rookie official makes something like 75 grand a year.

That's part time.

An official that has been in the league for years makes close to 200 grand a year.

The NFL is not shortchanging these guys.

As for the holding, the complaints about the blatant holds on are nothing new.

These replacements are making some mistakes, but the holding calls, or lack thereof, are nothing new.

I've always advocated for the nfl referees to be held personally accountable for screw-ups. Either monetary fines or suspensions for blatant mis-calls. Unfortunately just like government employees there is no motivation to do the job properly and no consequences for doing it improperly, therefore nothing will ever change.

No! Do not negotiate with the union! We can outsource their jobs to Chinese and Indian officials and increase the overall profitability of the NFL. It's the American way!
