Unbelievable non-call on Myers. That was a PK, clear as day. ****ing pussy ass ref.
SKC should have had a chance to win this game, and it was ripped out by a shitty ref who let far too much physical play happen, which played right into Houston's game plan. |

Fantastic season. People calling for Vermes' head are insane. This is a young team that is one piece away from greatness.
[cliche bitching about referee]The outcome of tonight's game would have been radically different with an even marginally competent referee. I will never understand how a team can possess the ball for 70+% of the game, and be called for the same number of fouls as the team that possessed the ball for less than 30% of the game. Particularly when Houston is known as a fouling team. It isn't impossible to foul on offense, but it is rare. So essentially, you would have to believe that in the 25 minutes or so that Houston "possessed" (and I use that term loosely) the ball, they were fouled 14 times. Considering a lot of the Houston "possession" was an outlet pass followed by a long ball, you basically have to believe Houston was fouled every time they tried to move the ball up the field. Meanwhile CJ Sapong is getting mugged all game, literally judo thrown to the ground. Kamara is getting smashed into and run over. Houston's right and left backs hacked down any player wide, and the referee had at least 3 opportunities to call a penalty kick in KC's favor and declined all three times. It is absolutely ridiculous that the aggressive team is not rewarded, but rather punished by a referee in that situation. Meanwhile, the refereeing in the first match wasn't necessarily unfair, so much as it stylistically disadvantaged SKC and advantaged HOU. At least he was consistent. I felt like I watched 3 different referees at tonight's game. It is unacceptable that I have attended more MLS games this year than that referee has worked in his career. FOR A PLAYOFF GAME. His performance was characterized almost exclusively by pettiness and cowardice. Only one card against HOU for persistent infringement when literally every time an SKC player had a step on the wing he was fouled. Refusal to call penalty kicks or even fouls in crucial situations so as to not influence the game. Petty insistence on ensuring that throw ins were taken from the exact correct spot, ruining flow and attack. No cards or even warnings for persistent delay of game and time wasting. And craziest to me of all, he motioned on at least 4 occasions to a HOU player to get up because he dived. Yet, he never issued a card for simulation, and did not change the way he called the game to account for the flopping. Recognizing that it is happening, but refusing to man up and deliver the required sanction and repeated warnings is outrageous to me. [/cliche] And none of that matters if SKC finishes their chances. This team will be back next year even better. They need one more attacking player to finish the puzzle. I am confident they will get it. And Rosell and Joseph looked fantastic in the midfield. They weren't under a ton of pressure tonight from the defense, but they each showed a creative flair that has been missing. I'm looking forward to seeing more of them next season. |

Well, sorry to see team number 2 go down last night. Knew it was going to be tough trying to come back from 2 goals against Houston, but they sure gave it their best effort. Hoping team number 1 can do something tonight in Salt Lake. Winner take all as the first game was a scoreless draw. Seattle and SLC just can't seem to score against one another. I think they played 3 games this year, and SLC scored the one and only goal. Should be interesting, even if no one will see it.

I'm not going to call for Vermes' head, exactly. I just think he should go back to technical director and let someone else handle the strategy and subbing.

He is not good at preparing his team for two different and important aspects of playoff time. The long lay off. Every time we had one we came out flat the first game back. The team that showed up in Houston was horrible, flat, disorganized and uninspired. You saw some of that last night where there was a real lull before Seth pulled everyone back from the abyss. Vermes' teams have a tendency to under perform in the playoff/clutch situations. USOC was a nice exception but one that was deeply reliant on REFEREE assistance and Seattle's implosion during the PKs. Two things you cannot bank on in big games. We are built for excelling in the regular season. The second is showing up consistently for a big game. Say what you will about Bruce Arena but his team shows up when they need to and get the job done. He's the anti-Vermes. His teams might play just good enough to get into the playoffs but once there they ratchet up a notch or three and show what expert coaching and high caliber players can do. For all of LAs drama and divadom the experience they have on the field makes for confident, directed, focused, and high level play. They are built for championships. They need only play well enough to get a shot at making the playoffs. I do think it's interesting and unfortunate for the MLS that BOTH conference champions are out in the first round under similar circumstances. Though SJ imploded at home and laid an egg similar to how SKC played on Sunday. At least SKC won the game last night winning the battle but losing the war. They showed up and played their hearts out and fell just short. Maybe they will take a look at the playoff format. I am not for Americanizing the game but in this instance where your first place finish ends up being a deterrent to getting to the next round is something that will not fly long term. Hopefully it's not a devastating loss for this young team. They are close. They face losing some key players. I hope that they start looking off the field at the structure of the team to see if there are some changes that need to be made as well. Another era of Marty will be testing and exhausting for a new generation of fans.

I know we're all disappointed, but they're not going to **** with the playoff format. Not if they're smart anyway. That's soccer.

It's funny, last year I was devastated to the point of actual tears when we lost to Houston at home in the semis. Especially after the emotional bombshell of a game vs. Colorado a few days earlier.
This time I'm just pissed. Pissed that that the MLS has such a stupid format. One that rewards the conference champions with second legged home game on a freakin Wednesday night. Kudos to SKC/Livestrong for yet another sell out at a late start game on a school night. Pissed at Vermes for reasons I've stated since last season. I guess this time realizing that he is what he is gave me some comfort in not expecting too much this post season. He did not disappoint. Unfortunately neither of these two situations will change. All in all, it was a blast of a season and, unlike other sports, our wait to get back in the saddle is only 15 weeks or so. I hope that gives the organization some time to iron out some of the kinks. No way will we succeed in COCACAF playing like we did on Sunday. However, if we show up like we did last night then we will represent very well. Can't wait.

Vermes' philosophies and gameplans put this team in positions to score goals so many times this season. It's not completely his fault that we couldn't put it in the back of the net. The team needs a finisher in the worst way... Teal "could" be that, he just isn't consistent... If this team adds a finisher this offseason (and keeps Espinoza\Collin)... look out.
PS I would call for an upgrade at the left back position, but I'd get boo'ed off the board. (and I think we already have a potentially better one in Markovic)
