So, the test didn't work last night, and after some talking with Sony I got it working today, but I literally only had two minutes in between films to make sure it actually worked. The curtain masking was half on the screen (set for Flat, and the Hobbit stuff is in Scope), the theater lights were on, and I didn't have the sound on. But I could definitely tell the machine was working correctly and running 48FPS because the footage looked sharper and smoother than anything I've seen before. Yeah, it did have a bit of hyperrealism to it, giving it a bit of a "videotapey" quality, but it didn't look as obnoxious as I thought it would. Now that I know it works, I'll have to run it again and see it from the theater. The 20-minute piece started with a static image of a little Asian girl. (No, this isn't part of the film; it was just something they put in there to check color balance, focus, etc.,.) Then it seemed to go into the standard trailer that has been showing. I will assume that, after the trailer, there is raw footage from the film, since they did specify 20 minutes of footage.
Another projectionist told me that he heard they were scaling back the HFR (High Frame Rate) presentations, and were probably only running it in 450 theaters. So chances are there will only be a few places to see it in your area. I think it'll be worth seeing the film twice, once in traditional 24FPS and the second time in 48FPS. |

It sounds a little like the "Soap Opera effect" you get with the modern HDTVs with the auto motion technology.

UnderEJ can explain it far better than me but it's like going from 8 track to 16 bit CD for the first time: It looks better and sounds better but your senses don't have time to adjust and can't comprehend immediately what they're hearing/seeing. 48 is the future. |

It still pisses me off that I will miss out on the Star Trek preview because it just HAS to be on IMAX. Just run the damn preview for all theaters you jackasses.
