edit: Sources say the player is Jovan Belcher. Police have yet to confirm.

An unnamed Kansas City Chiefs player has committed suicide at the team facility and authorities are on the scene, the police confirmed to ESPN on Saturday morning.

Local reports say police are operating with the belief the player fatally shot his girlfriend at a house before driving to Arrowhead Stadium and killing himself at around 8 a.m local time. The Associated Press reported the player's age to be 25.

"We can confirm that there was an incident at Arrowhead earlier this morning," the Chiefs said in a statement. "We are cooperating with authorities in their investigation."

There were no other injuries at the team facility, police said.

The Chiefs (1-10) were preparing to host the Carolina Panthers on Sunday.

The NFL has told the Panthers to travel as planned to Kansas City on Saturday, the Charlotte Observer has reported, citing interim general manager Brandon Beane.

The coaching and management must bear some blame in this. For all their talk of leadership, they should have. Seen that something was wrong and interceded prior to this point. The story is running on nfl network, just the same nonspecific report that was here.

Again, we never got into personal stuff. WE have the same car and he called me when he got his supercharged, we talked about normal shit. WE never talked about ball or personal life that much. I understand your position....however....I could NEVER understand the pain that a person is in to actually kill themself...or another. CAN NOT IMAGINE....so I would not attempt to judge him.

I'm starting to wonder if this happened inside the facility. Reports had said it was in the parking lot.

I'm not seeing any yellow tape, officers, crime scene investigators, etc. in the lot.

You have to tell Jacksonville to travel. Because they can't make the decision yet. Still too new. And the logistics of travel are too tight to tell them to hold off. So you have send them on the plane now and have them fly back if they have to.

Wow, that is ****ed. Not only do you think of Junior Seau with the brain damage, but also Chris Benoit who did a murder suicide a few years back. Head traumas and possible drug abuse (whether steroids or pain killers) could certainly have played a role in all three cases. Who knows? Regardless, so crazy.
