Chiefs Chiefs' Player Jevon Belcher involved in murder-suicide, shoots self at Arrowhead - Page 140

edit: Sources say the player is Jovan Belcher. Police have yet to confirm.

An unnamed Kansas City Chiefs player has committed suicide at the team facility and authorities are on the scene, the police confirmed to ESPN on Saturday morning.

Local reports say police are operating with the belief the player fatally shot his girlfriend at a house before driving to Arrowhead Stadium and killing himself at around 8 a.m local time. The Associated Press reported the player's age to be 25.

"We can confirm that there was an incident at Arrowhead earlier this morning," the Chiefs said in a statement. "We are cooperating with authorities in their investigation."

There were no other injuries at the team facility, police said.

The Chiefs (1-10) were preparing to host the Carolina Panthers on Sunday.

The NFL has told the Panthers to travel as planned to Kansas City on Saturday, the Charlotte Observer has reported, citing interim general manager Brandon Beane.

Yeah, I do. There are two different issues here. There is the team's need to maintain a proper public display of concern for the victim here. Likewise, there is the team's need to grieve a loss they've suffered.

I don't believe grieving their teammates death condones his actions in any way, shape, or form.

If you followed what the WWE did when Chris Benoit did the same thing they completely wiped him from everything. It is like he never existed. Once the details of what he did were known he was publicly condemned and shit on just like he deserved to be. Vince McMahon called him a monster.

The same thing needs to happen to Belcher much like it happened with Benoit, and Paterno.

Completely agree. And James Brown referring to "another young woman who also lost her life," as a secondary item is completely wrong. The woman who was murdered and her now parent-less child need to be the focal point of the tragedy. And Belcher should be seen as a murderer not a victim.

Look, I don't feel that way about him. I think he's a murderer.

If he has friends and players on that team who feel he's like family and need to mourn the person they knew then I am not going to begrudge them that. I just don't think the entire organization needs to be organizing or supporting team wide displays.

I don't think it's fair for us to judge how anyone mourns the death of their friend and teammate. Grief is a very personal thing and while we might see a murderer many of his teammates see Jovan. They are still trying to process WTF has happened in the past 36 hours.

I have no way supported his actions. I'm trying to understand them. I'm also trying to make the distinction between his actions and what his teammates feel. There is a very real distinction whether you choose to see it or not.

If this happened in an office we wouldn't be privy to how people mourned their friend. Likewise, the attachment an office worker feels to a coworker is nothing compared to what teammates feel for each other. These men are mourning in a fishbowl and subjected to standards and conditions they are apparently supposed to behave by to be considered mourning, grieving, dealing and coping 'appropriately.'

I'm simply saying there is no such thing.

During Derrick Johnson's post game presser, he spoke about Jovan like he was still alive. All his comments talked about him in the present and that shows these guys haven't even come close to realizing what happened or accepted it yet.

Exactly. Because we don't know him and were able to make snap judgments about him based on his reprehensible actions does not mean that people who actually knew and love him should have to.

What are you reading from the Chiefs Organization that bothers you? No one is painting him as a hero or anything like that. They're just describing him how they knew him. They knew him as a good teammate and good friend.

Not to mention they are probably still in the first stage of grief which is denial. When they move to the anger stage is when some of them will question what they knew or thought they knew about him.

What you were saying was that it was appropriate for the team to "honor their fallen teammate" and that they should treat his "loss" as "significant". Those are terms you use with showing respect for the deceased. That's not appropriate in these circumstances.

I understand that the situation is psychologically complicated and that they will, indeed, have to grieve in their own way, but it's not ever going to be appropriate for them to do ANYTHING either officially, or unofficially, as a team to "honor" him as a teammate. You can go to the funeral and grieve, and try to console his family, but the rest doesn't belong here. Those are the comments that you originally made that I was talking about.

We had a police officer in Dodge that murdered his girlfriend. Did the other officers all know him and feel terrible? Yes. But if they had done anything of the type that you are describing, then they would've been pilloried, and rightfully so.

Should the Carolina Panthers have held a commemorative banquet "going away" party for Rae Carruth?

I am not advocating anything. I'm saying that each person needs to deal with this as they need to. I do not think it's appropriate to project my values on another person's bereavement. Especially within the first 48 hours.

The ORGANIZATION NEEDS TO REFRAIN FROM ORGANIZED MOURNING OR HONORING OF JOVAN BELCHER.

Is that clear enough? I've said it before but perhaps not as clear as I needed to.
