Chiefs' Player Jevon Belcher involved in murder-suicide, shoots self at Arrowhead

edit: Sources say the player is Jovan Belcher. Police have yet to confirm.

An unnamed Kansas City Chiefs player has committed suicide at the team facility and authorities are on the scene, the police confirmed to ESPN on Saturday morning.

Local reports say police are operating with the belief the player fatally shot his girlfriend at a house before driving to Arrowhead Stadium and killing himself at around 8 a.m local time. The Associated Press reported the player's age to be 25.

"We can confirm that there was an incident at Arrowhead earlier this morning," the Chiefs said in a statement. "We are cooperating with authorities in their investigation."

There were no other injuries at the team facility, police said.

The Chiefs (1-10) were preparing to host the Carolina Panthers on Sunday.

The NFL has told the Panthers to travel as planned to Kansas City on Saturday, the Charlotte Observer has reported, citing interim general manager Brandon Beane.

Jovan's mom said he heard him say something to the effect of "you can't speak to me like that."

Even if you have a roster building philosophy that allows for players who are somewhat rugged individuals...this goes way beyond that.

It's clear why he went undrafted...but it just screams to me like an example of ***** ignoring a lot of red flags and keeping this guy around because he was one of his favorites.

Yikes, 'baby momma crazy.' I wonder if she was having postpartum depression issues and had no help in coping with a very real condition. It sounds like whatever problems they had multiplied significantly once the baby was born. Not unlike many couples.

Bottom line this sounds like a cluster**** of a perfect storm.

Reggie Paramoure, who played on defense with Belcher at the University of Maine, was texting with his former teammate last Friday night. "I see yall boys aint doing too well," Paramoure wrote, referring to the Chiefs' 1-10
start.

"Yea man," Belcher replied, "our 'o' can't even put 7 in the board for us, but everything good bro, baby momma crazy but I have a little girl almost 3 month man and she's a blessing, she makes me smile on the worst day."

"Daughter!" Paramoure wrote, and then jokingly suggested that Belcher better have a gun ready to ward off future boyfriends. "Yea man," Belcher responded, "I got about 8 guns now, from hand Gunz to assault rifles for her little bf's."

Police Release New Details in Hours Leading up to Belcher, Perkins Murder-Suicide

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — New details have emerged regarding what happened in the hours that led up to the murder-suicide of Jovan Belcher and his live-in girlfriend, Kasandra ‘Kasi’ Perkins.

Police said across town, hours before the fatal shootings, someone called police to report a suspicious vehicle in the 700 block of E. Armour Boulevard. When police arrived they found a man sleeping in a black Bently outside an apartment complex. The officer knocked on the window and woke the man who identified himself as Jovan Belcher. According to police, Blecher told officers he was waiting for his girlfriend to return home. The officers asked Belcher to call her. Police said Belcher dialed a number using his cell phone and shortly after a woman appeared at the apartment complex door and let Blecher inside. Police said Belcher was cooperative and did not appear to be drunk so they left.

Witnesses at the building later told police that Belcher left the complex around 6:30 a.m. Less than 90 minutes later, police were called to Belcher’s home in the 5400 block of Crysler to investigate a reported shooting.

Police said around 7:45 a.m., Belcher shot Kasi Perkins, the mother of his infant daughter, multiple times inside their home on Crysler. It’s unclear how many times Perkins had been shot. Police said they’re waiting for autopsy results to determine the exact number as some of the bullets passed through Perkins’ body, leaving multiple wounds.

Police said after shooting Perkins he leaned down and kissed her on the forehead and then apologized to his mother who was home at the time. Belcher then drove to Arrowhead Stadium, where he briefly spoke with Chiefs General Manager Scott *****, head coach Romeo Crennel and defensive coordinator Gary Gibbs in the parking lot.

Detectives investigating the case said Belcher told Chiefs coaches, “I can’t go back. I killed her.” Before taking his own life, Belcher knelt down and made the sign of a cross over his chest.

Police said the gun used in the shooting death of Perkins was not the same gun that Belcher used on himself. Police said they have seized both guns and that both were legally registered.

There are a couple of other things that caught my eye.

Perkins would mention, unhappily, that Belcher was often out late doing "team bonding stuff," she says. According to another of Perkins's friends, Devene Dunson-Rusher, team bonding sometimes meant drinking, and Perkins was uneasy with some of the Chiefs players with whom Belcher was carousing.

I'd be interested to know who these teammates are.

According to Belcher's friends, Perkins wanted to upgrade their lifestyle and move to a different house....

Without trying to steer this into a DC-style discussion, I wouldn't say this is uncommon or unexpected...

A lot of times when two young people have a child, the woman instantly matures some and becomes a "mother" while the man doesn't want to abandon his childish ways. It doesn't always happen that way (the exact opposite happens sometimes too) but it happens enough to say that the above is not surprising.

I absolutely agree.

Just caught my eye because several of the original reports mentioned financial issues, and this is the first time it has been mentioned that the Bentley had been purchased within the last 30 days - as well as her apparent desire to improve their lifestyle.

His childish idea was to buy a car that is worth more than the house they were renting.
