2012 Kansas City Royals Repository Thread

2012 Slogan: Our Time

A better, more accurate 2012 Slogan: It is Finally Next Year
(from Great Expectations)

An alternative slogan if you don't like that one: Someone has to win this crappy division
(from alnorth)

With the beginning of a new year, it is time for the 2012 version of the Royals Repository Thread. We've got Hosmer, we've got a 2011-dominating Gordon, we've got Moose, we've got hopefully a killer bullpen, we've got a stereotypical slow slugging DH, we've got easily one of the best defensive shortstops in the AL, we've got a promising catcher in Salvador Perez. Hell, we've got offense and promising prospects galore.

We do not have starting pitching.

Oh yeah, we've also got this:

Get ready for, (as of January 2012 anyway), one of the most confusing puzzles of a baseball season in recent Royals history. Will they suck? Maybe, I don't know. Will we be given a year of 0.500 baseball? Possibly, I don't know. Will they win the division and go to the playoffs for the first time in 27 years? For the first time in a long time, it could happen, I don't know. 92 losses, 92 wins, or anything in between would not surprise a lot of us.

Everything goes here except Gameday threads and really big news. If a giant story breaks, the Royals achieve some awesome milestone, or we sign/lose a highly significant player/coach/mascot/whatever, then it might also deserve its own thread. This being Chiefs Planet, please do not clutter the board with new threads about trivial Royals news or you will only annoy those who come here for just Chiefs football. If you aren't sure and its not a Gameday thread, it goes here.

What sort of stuff often goes here? SPchief explained it well, so I'll just copy that:

Quote:
If you locate something of interest.. ANYTHING.. deals on apparel, best ways in/out of the stadium, giveaways, great stories from this season or from seasons gone by, rumors, trades, anything.... feel free to post it here.

He was incredibly overrated because he didn't understand the strike zone. He still doesn't understand the strike zone. I said it then, I'll continue to say it.

It was based on plenty of substance, you just ignored it. And you were clearly wrong.

Nah, Shields has legitimately strong strikeout rates and can fall back on that changeup to get himself out of jams if necessary.

McCarthy is more akin to Kyle Lohse - an extreme groundballer who gets by through not walking anyone and minimizing damage.

Shields is better than McCarthy by a fair piece, especially if you're talking about his likely effectiveness in a playoff series. At the same time, he's not so much better than McCarthy that its worth giving up Wil Myers for him.

His peripherals might be slightly worse, but mccarthys fip is right on the same level. He's a great fit in that he is willing to take a one year deal. Then if he's lighting the world on fire we can trade him when we bring duffy and paulino back.

At the risk of being the other baseball Knowmo...

#Royals GM Dayton Moore has left Nashville; no trade likely (for now) with Tampa Bay. Both sides still interested. Talks will continue.

Mission Accomplished. Dayton tried, and by gosh, that's all we can really ask....

Doesn't seem likely at all anymore considering that Tampa clearly wants Myers and we clearly would demand more than what they are willing to give for him.

#Royals actually talked to #Mets more about Jon Niese and Zack Wheeler in trade variations involving Wil Myers -- not Dickey. Not happening.

That's ... interesting.

Probably not both, though, right?

Wheeler and Niese would be a nice return for Myers; in fact I doubt the Mets would give up both of them.

I wouldn't take one or the other for Myers though. The hitter is going to be the more valuable asset over 162 games and neither of the pitchers are established enough to justify trading a hitter with an equal or better pedigree for.

I'm not the guy who hates the idea of trading prospects, but riddle me this. Isn't the idea behind trading prospects to match players with team needs?

Our single biggest weakness is RF. We have the best RF prospect in baseball. What do we really stand to gain by moving him?

I get the fact that we really need starting pitching, but isn't this literally the worst possible way to go about acquiring some?

It's like saying "one of our our ships is sinking. Quick, run to our other ship that is brand new and functioning perfectly, tear it apart, and use the materials to try to patch a hole in the old, sinking ship."

Anyone else listening to 610? I just caught pieces of a bit with some baseball analyst talking about how the big news from the WM was that the Royals are the front runners for Sanchez...is that right? I have been out of the loop on business for the last couple of weeks, but if we can sign Sanchez and not have to trade any prospects, I'm all for it.
