Chiefs Alex Smith to ask for release

He is requesting his release because he doesn't want to be a backup.

A team would have to want to trade for him as a starter...the 49ers wouldn't try to trade him to a team that wants to spend the top pick on a QB (or the 34th pick, even) and immediately create another controversy similar to the one Alex is trying to get out of.

Like the 49ers are going to accommodate that.

Alex is going to be free to shop his services, but there's no way the 49ers are cutting an asset.

He'll find a team that wants him, and then they'll work out compensation. He's not hitting the open market. They should flip the Jets a 2nd and Smith for Revis.

They aren't going to trade for him to be a backup. However, why is a team giving him a new contract?

They would be trading for him to be a stopgap...same as he was in SF.

This makes absolutely no sense.

Any team that trades for him is viewing him as a stop gap. That's what he is. He didn't get a single offer longer than 3 years last offseason and he won't get that now either.

Alex Smith is gonna be cut. 49ers are in cap hell and have a lot of free agents. Why would a team give up a pick for him when they know he's gonna get cut.

He has a $1 million dollar roster bonus on the 4th day of the new league year.

They'll either have a deal in place before then or cut him. I doubt they pay him $1 million dollars, only to have to cut him later.

That's a good point. They aren't going to pay that bonus so I would expect the month and a half to transpire in some deal.

I think the first day of the new calendar year is the start of free agency.
