The run differential thing was very stupid of him to say. Shields is your best pitcher so you let the better pitcher take the mound with a 2 or 3 run lead, but if you have a 1 one lead you let the inferior guy pitch? |

I believe the thinking is that although Shields is your best pitcher, Holland's good first inning is better than Shield's pitches 100+.
Not saying I agree, or that I wasn't upset with Shields being pulled. That being said, you can't kill a guy for a toss up type decision after it doesn't work out. If Holland doesn't suck up the place and getz doesn't bobble the ground ball we never have this discussion.

That's such a painful way to lose....so painful. I honestly would rather Holland get shelled, but to miss the plate time after time after time. Its torture.
Holland looks so rigid and nervous in these situations. Loses like the are hard to shake.

You probably have James Shields for 2 years at the max...you use EVERY BIT of him you can right now.
There was nothing to indicate he couldn't handle the 9th...he was coasting. |

The run differential thing is maddening! Typical Yost. Another thing that pisses me off about Yost is that Bukaty is the one guy that actually asks him tough questions and he acts like a jerk to him. Reminds me too much of how Pinkel has acted in his career, smug for no reason at all.

If you poll fans after the end of each season, I'm guessing you'll find that 29 of the managers are idiots. The manager of the team who wins the world series will have a significant minority who say the team won in spite of his buffoonery.

You might have some pitchers who are more consistent, or at least "have it" on a couple of their pitches if the other 1 or 2 pitches aren't hitting the strike zone that night. Every time you go to the bullpen, you roll the dice that on this night he might lose his release point. If we knew for sure that on this particular night Holland had it and could throw first pitch strikes on any of his pitches, then its a no-brainer, he's better than Shields after 102 pitches. We didn't know that though, and we knew that Shields had every one of his pitches working, and 102 pitches is not that much for a horse like him. He should have at least been given one base-runner before we are finally forced to switch from a guy who has it but might be tired, to someone who is fresh but might not have it.

This is why I disagree with the standard decision to go with one guy in the 8th and the next guy in the 9th. It should depend on how well the setup guy threw, and the upcoming batters (splits). I wish James would do research on the outcome of teams who leave the guy in another inning, vs replacing him with the closer.
I can't tell you how many times I've seen a 1-2-3 inning in the 8th, and the manager HAS to go with the closer in the 9th and he comes in struggling to throw strikes. Infuriating. |
