This really touched in a personal sore spot for me, so I'm going to vent for a little bit.
I'm certified to teach, and have been for four years. Since my certification, I have subbed (full and part time), taught for a semester (for a teacher who was paralyzed in a motorcycle accident), and worked as a SPED para. I've also coached HS football for four years. Due to the economy and the "you gotta know somebody" nature of getting any job, I haven't been able to land a teaching job. I've got a stack of amazing reference and recommendation letters, and was 4.0 in my post grad Ed. work. Let me first say that this kid needs to learn some time and place control. There's a right way to do things, and putting on this self-glorifying show for his classmates isn't it. That said, teachers like this couldn't make me more ****ing pissed. I understand the grind that teaching takes, after years of teaching the same stuff, the mindlessness of high stakes testing and dumbass leadership, and the overall feeling of having your hands tied by people who know ****-all about educating kids. I'm, at present, a para in an alternative school. It's a ****ing grind. At least 5-8 times a week I have to take down and/or restrain a kid (CPI Certified, so don't freak out). I spend every moment in the building on defense. I have been punched, kicked, slapped, spit on, bitten, shoved. I have been injured 4 or 5 times this year. I've had to defend myself against abuse charges because some dumbass kid convinced his grandma he was attacked without provocation. However, though I'm just a para, due to my certification and experience, I've had the opportunity to lead classes many times this year. What's amazing (read; not at all amazing), is that when they get a teacher in front of them who engages them, shows some heart, uses media, REAL discussion, and student interests to present the information, the behavior issues drop substantially. Due to the nature of the school I'm at, there will always be violent and out of control students. But I truly feel like kids at some schools/classes are done a disservice by these teachers who throw up a couple of transparencies, put a worksheet in front if a kid, and then ask for complete silence. In short... **** this teacher and all like her who think a ****ing ditto with fill in the blanks is acceptable to teach kids. Those things have their place, but too many of these dimwits lean on them nonstop, and it leads not only to poor learning, but poor behavior, and misses out on many of the other things teaching should be about. Content is number one, but have some ****ing arguments, it teaches logic and critical thinking. Have the kids discuss things with each other and actually *gasp* disagree, it teaches social skills and problem solving. Quit sitting on your fat ass and ****ing do something. ... Either that, or get the **** out of the way so a teacher who will do those things can get to ****ing work. |

This young man has many decisions pending to help find his path in life....does he go with his dream of taking his garage stoner jam sessions to his true dream.....Skid Row Tribute Band....probably the best in their bus district.......or locate a gas station who doesn't mind hiring a 20 year old high school Junior.
