If the Chiefs go 8-8 or better 49ers get a 2nd round pick.

A third- or second-rounder from Kansas City, the remnant of the Alex Smith deal. Now it can be told: The second draft choice San Francisco will receive from the Smith deal will be K.C.'s second-rounder in 2014 if the Chiefs go 8-8 or better this season. It will be a third-rounder in 2014 if Kansas City is under .500 this season.

So: San Francisco will probably have first-, second- and four third-rounders next year. But if the Chiefs surprise, it'll more likely be a one, two twos and three threes. As we've seen, GM Trent Baalke is dangerous with extra picks in his hands. If Colin Kaepernick is very good, the Niners should be annual contenders for years with the picks laid out that way.

I don't give a shit about Alex Smith.

I give a shit about the Chiefs being ignorants like the fans.

Which is exactly what this thread is about.

Seriously, it's pretty hysterical how circular your consternation is.

1. You make an assertion that a trade is indefensible!

2. I make a point to defend it.

3. You miss that point.

4. I note that you missed the point.

5. You say it doesn't matter, because the trade is indefensible!

jd1020, folks!

What's hysterical is thinking there was some kind of bidding war for Alex Smith when the Chiefs were the only team willing to take it up the ass.

So, we are just dumb negotiators?

Them: other teams are willing to give us a second rounder for Alex
Us: we have a higher second round pick, isn't that good enough?
Them: nah, we want more
Us: ok, we will double any other teams offer
Them: you sure? Ok
Us: done. Thanks

That's like going to an auction where the top bid is $20 and has been going up in 2 dollar increments and you jump the bid to $40.

You have to get the 49ers to agree to the trade.
Your scenario is baseless and silly.

We got raped on the trade comp and your hypothetical suggests giving up MORE. There is nothing I could say as a response that would "destroy my position"

There are two problems with this.

1. You don't know what other teams were willing to offer, Schefter's report notwithstanding.

2. The Chiefs didn't know what other teams were offering. What they did know is that they wanted Alex Smith.

Yes, yes. That's a point you've already made.

Which I rebutted. And you ignored. Because saying things is fun.

So giving up more is bad and giving up less is good? Welcome to reality. That's why the Chiefs agreed to the 8-8 escalator. They agreed to it because they believed it was the least they could offer and still get Alex Smith. It had absolutely nothing to do with setting a bar for success or establishing a goal.

At the end of the day... this is where I'm at:

Considering the price, the Chiefs must win with Alex Smith. He must play at LEAST at a near elite level in Andy Reid's offense, and they must make the playoffs. This is similar to the Shield/Myers trade, which only works if the Royals make the playoffs with Shields. Same deal here.

Paying the price given for Smith only makes sense if you think you have a legitimate chance to make the playoffs this year and next. Otherwise, what's the point (respectability? come on)

The price paid for Smith lends strong evidence to the Chiefs seeing him as more than a two-year stopgap. If he's NOT more than a two-year stopgap and they don't make the playoffs with him, they gave up too much.

I like Geno Smith and still think he has the physical tools and ability to be an excellent NFL quarterback, if he works and is put in the right situation. But I'm not a Geno or bust guy. And it's not just about the 2013 draft... giving up so much for Alex Smith hurt the Chiefs ability to draft an intriguing QB in either this class or the next.

If the Chiefs DO win now with Alex Smith, they will drop further down the draft order and surrender their 2nd round pick. This really inhibits their flexibility in the 2014 draft and ability to trade up if there IS a QB Andy Reid really likes within range.

So as a Chiefs fan, I HOPE that Alex Smith can be a highly effective QB, capable of playing at a near-elite level in a more QB-driven offense that asks more of him than what the 49ers did. But I'm not just going to blindly accept and hope that will all work out.

I'm also not going to blindly accept "respectability" this year. I'd rake 5-6 wins with a lesser QB (of the Campbell/Orton variety) and the extra picks in 2013 and 2014 (even if they're not used on a QB) over 16 wins this year and next with Alex Smith and no 2nd round picks.

The latter is a 'stuck-in-neutral' situation that does nothing to move the Chiefs towards ultimate goals (playoff success, Super Bowl, etc). I think the Chiefs would be better off long-term in the first situation (5 wins and two more high picks).

I won't say the Chiefs are "Aiming" for 8-8. I'm sure the goals are higher. I don't get the whole "escalator" argument that has ranged throughout this thread over the past several pages. I don't think it says anything about their goals... it's just an easy measuring stick for the compensation.

This is a decent outlook, though after winning 2 games last year, I think KC fans can find enough joy in winning 8 games and just barely missing the playoffs in year 1 after the 2-14 season. I still think KC wins 9 and goes playoffs. It would be rare, if ever... but like many agree... the Chiefs were not nearly as crappy as their record. They needed QB and coaching help... and likely got it.

There's a difference between being blind and expecting an immediate SB versus finding SOME optimism and a wait-and-see mindset.

That is the only part that elicits such extreme negativity from both "sides."

I don't see anyone screaming "SB bound this season!!!", but I do see lots of people screaming "we iz doomed!!!". And that's the sad and divisive element happening here.

After looking over other KC forums, I was really surprised when I read so much gloom-n-doom on this one.

You are making silly assertions based on your opinion of the player. We don't know how the trade went down. I don't care about NFl experts telling us what was or wasn't in the table.

Bottom line, it was for more than I'd have thought was needed to get him, but not by much, and if this is Reid's guy, then do what you have to to get him.

Wait and see? Alex Smith is on a 2 year contract. He either figures something out after 9 years (doubt it) or this was a big waste of resources in typical Chiefs fashion.

I fear, however, that no matter how bad/mediocre Smith may be this coming season he'll get an extension after he "earns" it in the offseason.

By wait and see, I don't mean that "we" give him years to get his shit together. What I mean is... wait till you see him (and this offense) in action in a few games before the sky is falling. We are in the middle of June and it seems like some people are gonna slit their wrists over the coming season. That just seems... premature and weak.

Well... when the Chiefs have the #1 pick and a top 2 pick in every round and decide to follow a 30 year model of failure, people may tend to get upset.

I'm not saying that they had to get a QB #1 but they could have got a QB at #34 much like the 49ers and Bengals did to get their QBs. And lets not pretend that of the QBs available at #34 that Alex Smith is head and shoulders above them.
