Reid: Chiefs have 'phenomenal approach'

Reid: Chiefs have 'phenomenal approach'
By Bill Williamson

The importance of the quarterback in the NFL cannot be understated. It all starts there.

That is particularly true when an offensive-minded coach is starting a new program. That’s why Andy Reid is headed to the seven-week break between the offseason program and training camp in Kansas City feeling so good about his team.

I got a chance catch up with Reid in a telephone interview Friday. I asked him if he thought his program was further along at this point than he might have anticipated.

“I’d say yes and that’s because the quarterbacks can handle everything,” Reid said. “It starts with Alex [Smith]. He has the mental capacity to handle everything we’re doing and that helps everybody … I really like the approach of the entire team. They have had a phenomenal approach.”

He said the volume of work the team has gotten through so far is one of the team’s best accomplishments to date.

Reid addressed some other topics as well:

On the rookies: He said he thinks first-round pick, tackle Eric Fisher, third-round picks tight end Travis Kelce and running back Knile Davis, fourth-round pick, linebacker Nico Johnson and fifth-round pick, defensive back Sanders Commings can all make impacts as rookies.

“I think we have some guys who have a chance to play and have some production,” Reid said.

On left tackle Branden Albert, who recently returned to the team after a short contract squabble: “Branden has done a nice job. He came into camp in shape and that helped. He’s handled it well. He’s a good kid. There’s been no problem.”

On second-year defensive tackle Dontari Poe: “He’s easy to excited about. He’s a big kid. He’s a real big kid. He is very athletic. He’s very intelligent. He wants to be the best. He has a strong work ethic. I think he is going to be a heck of a player. The sky is the limit for him.”

lol I was thinking the same thing -- damn the chiefs have been butt reamed so much, I don't remember the last time the chiefs strung anything together but disappointment.

Well, we have been voted as most likely to go from worst to first on NFL network. With all the probowlers we already have, a ****in awesome line , one of the proven better coaches in the league and a QB that just might be something good, I , for one actually have high hopes.

I mean really, Between ***** being married to Cassel and putting Crennel in as head coach it was just epic fail. And it all started when Haley wanted Cassel out and Pioli said no , so Haley said **** you. Palko is what you get Bitch. It was obvious We were doomed.

The Browns, beat you last year. A very bad browns team with equally bad coaching, and very little talent beat the Chiefs last year. They too, like the chiefs have a lot of optimism going into the season with their new coaching staff, and draft picks. That is going to be a very good game between two and up and coming teams.....

Bingo. I don't suspect though, that the Chiefs will have any problem with the worst team in football the Raiders this year. Cleveland? You guys will prolly win because you are at home. But I think that both teams are going to be better than most anticipate.

DOES NOT MATTER.

Beat legit teams. SR is right, right, right.

Get this "lowered expectations"-shit the **** outta' here. Take it somewhere the **** else, because I DO NOT want to ****ing hear it.
If we're going "win now", then mother****er; you better start WINNING NOW.

It isn't the end of the discussion. How in the hell do you expect to beat the good teams if you can't beat the bad ones? First win the games you should win, and then start worrying about the ones you shouldn't.

Who has lowered expectations. You said in the other thread that its refreshing to hear someone talk without having an agenda. I have no agenda when it comes to the Chiefs. I have said since the day I got here, that the Chiefs, now this was pre draft, were a 10 win team. How is that wrong? Your schedule, is rated as the worst of the worst. So what, if you lose to the broncos twice, beat every other team in your division, that's 4 wins right there. To get to the 10 win mark, at some point you are going to lose games that you assume you could win, and win one or two that you thought you would lose. Even the best of teams only usually average about 10-12 wins. That means, they probably lose a game or two they should of won. Like the packers two years ago didn't assume they would beat the lowly chiefs? Who in the hell would of predicted that if you said the packers would go 15-1, not very many people on this planet, would of said, yeah, their one loss, is going to come against the Chiefs........

I like this approach, but my fave approach, is teams that take the win the first game on your schedule. And from the Chiefs players I have read about, they seem to all be talking about Jax. That's where their head should be. **** the broncos, **** every other game. the goal has to be to start 1-0

Because we have the greatest, most tested, free agent QB the market had to offer? Because we have the most awesomest, draftedest, O-line in the west?

Look pal, I didn't set the agenda or spend the capital. But like Joe Friday said in 'Dragnet'; "the difference is, you made the promise, now I'M going to keep it".
