I don't think those here are upset with not taking a qb at 1, there wasn't one worth it. It's that based in what we've heard they're potentially going to tie themselves to another qb who they ( the pessimistic here) view as someone who another team thought wasn't good enough.

Alex Smith is the catalyst for all the negativity on this board.

People who loved the Reid and Dorsey hires now do not support a single decision they have made yet, even in the absence of evidence that they made a bad decision.

This is hyperbole.

I'm on board with most of the moves they've made.

Alex Smith, Sean Smith and Dunta Robinson were shitty moves, though.

Exactly.

They didn't like the QB's in the draft? Fine.

But if that's the case, and it were up to me, I would have saved those two early 2nd round picks and picked up another stopgap and started building for the future.

Instead, they chose to overspend on a guy that an elite team has been trying to get rid of for three years. They've made nothing but "win now" moves. You're goddamn right I expect them to win now.

The picks were not two early 2nds. One was. This years.

Next years is only a 2nd roundr if we are 8-8... which would put us at mid to late 2nd, depending just how far over 8 wins we might happen to go.

7-9 or worse is a 3rd rounder. So mid to high 3rd rounder depending how many wins less than 7.

Give it a few years why they look for a guy of their own/develop. Alex Smith is going to help us get to the playoffs NOW why we are building this thing.

If Alex Smith doesn't play well he will be replaced. We all know Reid isn't like Pioli. He'll try again if he fails with Alex.

Smith will get 2 years for sure. If he has a decent year this year, I'd imagine well see a contract extension.

That's great if he gets us to the playoffs, that's why you make the move and that's what these moves say " we're winning now". That's great, but with that, I'm also expecting to win now.

It can't go both ways.

"Don't be negative, they're trying to win now" " you're setting them up to fail thinking they'll win 10 and make the playoffs"

It's either or.

This season will rely on a lot more than just Alex Smith. Our DL is a dumpster fire, our interior OL is completely unknown, our CB's are unknown, our #2 WR is unknown. Everything is unknown.

I think it depends on how well Alex Smith does personally that will determine this deal.
I think we have some good talent, but not quite enough to make the playoffs for sure.

Do you think we have as much overall talent as a team than the Bengals, Ravens, Steelers, Texans or Colts? Because 3 of those teams will be our challenge to make the playoffs as a wildcard.

How does a team that went 8-8 and lost more than they replaced in the steelers factor into this equation? Not to mention, that three of those teams, are in the same division and will beat the hell out of each other.

The Steelers still had the best defense in the league statistically last year and their QB had one of his best seasons in his career.
They got the best pass rusher in the draft and a very talented RB to fix their rushing attack.

Yeah they lost Mike Wallace, but they had other solid weapons. They're gonna be in the WC race.

We'll see if they tie themselves to Smith. They haven't yet.

Really?

I'd say spending two early R2 picks on the guy is a rather large commitment.

That's high compensation. What have they committed to Smith?

Draft picks are currency. Do you honestly think they'd spend two valuable picks on a guy they aren't committed to?

Not to mention, it likely leaves us without the ammunition to move up for a QB next year in the event they want one.

Yes I do. If he underwhelms, I honestly think he won't be here longer that two years. Assuming this is just another SP and Cassell tied at the hip situation is a stretch.

Just to clarify, I think Smith will play well, and probably will get an extension.
