Here's the way I see it, although I doubt this was the thinking of Dorsey and Reid.
Despite what most on this board thinks, the Chiefs were bad last year and not just at QB. Charles's talent masked the depth and talent issues on the O-line and the receiving options are practically nil. Even Bowe is iffy IMO. To bring ANY rookie QB into a situation as unstable as that is asking for trouble, especially a QB from the 2013 class that you have no strong feelings on. If you take a high pick gamble, the pressure will be to put the kid on the field too early. So you will have a player that may not be ready on a team that has a lack of talent and depth. That has played out to bad results over and over in this league. Getting a veteran leader that takes care of the ball while going with a low risk option (Bray) made a ton more sense given the state of the franchise and talent available in the 2013 QB class. The only thing that runs counter to this line of logic is the price they spent on getting Smith. If it weren't for that, I could totally get on board with what Reid and Dorsey are doing. I guess we'll see how it plays out.

I'm not an Alex fan but I believe all that is true. I'm also glad he wasn't immediately named the franchise QB and signed long term. Hope for the best but be prepared for the worst...

Raiders, Jags, and Titans (but they're pretty good at the non-skill positions.)

The Raiders at least have a wave of emotion to ride and a QB that can elude a pass rush and make plays with his feet until he's up to speed. MJD does not look healthy and his heart doesn't seem to be in it...

Exactly what I was thinking. It's basically the cripple fight that our match-up with them was last year. I've got the Raiders too, because as you said, they've at least got Pryor who can evade some pressure. The Jags have absolutely nothing by the looks of things.

I'm not saying pass on a QB if your team isn't up to snuff. There is NO WAY KC should pass on a QB the talent of Luck or RGIII regardless of the state of their franchise. I'm just saying that if, as GM who inherits a bad team, if you aren't sold on a rookie QB, then drafting one high isn't doing him or your franchise any favors. Jacksonville with Gabbert happens more times than the alternative. When the Jets drafted Sanchez, he may not have been ready to start, but they were able to make it work because they had a good team in place. He's digressed since then, but it wasn't a bad pick at the time. They made 2 AFC championship games with him. The complete roster turnover of the QBs from last year also is a good indicator that they are serious about addressing the issue.

I've seen several complaints about the Hunt's unwillingness to draft a QB in the first round. Even if it's not a Luck or RGIII. Just show the fanbase you are willing to try, take a chance, do something different, be willing to take risks to get a franchise QB of our very own.
I'm not the sharpest bulb in the drawer, but it seems like that is what the Jets have been doing. They drafted Sanchez, the Chiefs traded for another team's backup. They drafted Geno, the Chiefs traded for another team's backup. If the Jets are doing things the way they should be done in today's NFL, why do so many in the media refer to them as a circus? East coast media bias? Is the media as a whole just one big collective dumbass that doesn't know anything either? I see many excellent points made on both sides of many debates here, but this is confusing. I'm sure every owner wants to do the right thing, but they don't want to end up running a circus. They'd need a bunch of elephants and stuff. Dinny |
