A ton of passing defense snaps, a ton of passing defense looks.

I watched the 2nd half of the game tonight, and marked down the different looks Bob Sutton gave Romo every time he dropped back to pass the ball.

Forgive my shorthand:
  • 4-3: four down lineman (Hali/Poe/Bailey/Houston), Berry playing alongside DJ
  • 4-3: four down lineman (Jackson/Poe/DeVito/Hali), Houston rushes ,DJ holds at LOS
  • Base: three down lineman, eight players drop
  • Base: three down lineman, Hali & Houston rush
  • Base: three down lineman, Hali & Houston hold at LOS
  • Base: three down lineman, Hali rush, Houston drops four times
  • Base: three down lineman, Hali drops, Houston rush
  • Base: three down lineman, Hali rush, Houston drops, DJ holds at LOS
  • Base: three down lineman, Hali & Houston rush, DJ drops from the LOS at the snap
  • Base: three down lineman, Hali drops, Houston rush, DJ & Jordan drop from the LOS at the snap
  • Base: three down lineman, Hali rush, Houston drops, DJ & Jordan drop from the LOS at the snap three times
  • Nickel: three down lineman, Hali & Houston rush
  • Dime: poe + Jackson down, Hali rush, eight players drop
  • Dime: poe + Jackson down, Hali & Houston rush, Berry blitzes from ROLB
  • Dime: poe + bailey down, Hali rush, Houston holds at LOS, Berry playing alongside DJ
  • Dime: poe + Jackson + Hali down, Houston rush, DJ moves to blitz but peels off with RB
  • Dime: poe + bailey down, Hali drops, Houston rush, Berry blitzes from LB, Demps blitzes from 10 yards out
  • Dime: poe + Hali down, Houston drops, DJ delayed blitz, Abdullah playing at ILB, Demps blitzing from LOLB
  • Dime: poe + bailey down, Hali lined up as ILB, Houston rush, Berry blitzes from ROLB, Abdullah blitzes from slot
  • Dime: poe + Jackson down, Hali rush, Houston holds at LOS, Lewis blitzes from LOLB, DJ @ LOS at snap but drops
  • Dime: poe + jackson down, Hali & Houston rush, DJ moves to blitz but peels off with RB, Berry lined up right over TE
  • Dime: poe + bailey + Hali down, Houston rush, DJ moves to blitz but peels off with RB, Berry playing alongside DJ
  • Dime: poe + Bailey down, Hali drops, Houston & DJ drops from the LOS at the snap, Berry blitz from ROLB, Abdullah blitz from slot
  • 1-3-7 alignment: only poe down, Hali rushes, Houston drops, DJ drops from the LOS at the snap, Parker & Abdullah blitz from ROLB
Pretty crazy.

That is what you call a modern, complex defense.

You could see that in Joekel's body language when facing Houston.

I just don't want to see any more standing around right before the snap. Man that was frustrating to watch. They always seemed to recover from it but MAN!!!!

It's so sweet to see a man willing to use this talent to attack and do it from every possible angle...

Other than sneaking the secondary close to the LOS and attacking it's really hard to nail down any tendencies. Constantly lining up in odd formations, strange stunts, and shifting heavy.

He/they like to disguise the S. Sometimes he's a LB and at times only there for "show" in the box. Sometimes he's in man, sometimes zone, but lined up right there on the LOS.

I'm no expert but it almost seems like they're trying to shift the idea of zone blitz confusion to the secondary instead of the front 7...

Yep. Doesn't want to become predictable with who actually drops/blitzes in certain calls. Give some freedom to the OLB's to rush up in a two point or down in a 3 depending on their assignment.

Abdulluh and Demps have done a really good job in sub packages. Parker made a huge play and Cooper has held up in a handful of snaps

Reading this shit makes me really....stupified on how it's worked so far.

There's a lot of responsibility here on the S and if Lewis is as big a POS as CP wants us to believe this wouldn't even be possible...

He's done very well and I'm pleasantly surprised. Staying healthy is key with him of course but you can't be a step slow and hold up too well. Only way anyone can make up for speed is with smarts and knowing the D and game plan really well. Theyre going to get burned on some big pass plays no doubt but I will take the aggressiveness anyday

the pure volume of what they have installed I've got to give Sutton a ton of credit. He only brought with him the QC coach on D for the jets, Mark DeLone. The rest of the staff had to learn the D. Brashear, Gibbs, and Emmitt Thomas have decades in the business though and have coached all sorts of D and technique. That playbook is crammed full of 4-3 3-4 over under 4-6 all sorts of stunts techniques and coverages. That's a ton to adapt to in one offseason. With CBA rule
changes in the meeting time allowed in the offseason and all things considered its very remarkable

I'd really recommend that Direckshun reads the link from booger.

Just because Poe is aligning in the 3 technique doesn't mean it's a 4-3 look.

I could be wrong but I've yet to see Dontari align in a 9.
