What music are you into right now???

I like all kinds of music. Country, rap , rock , classic rock, alt rock, jazz, metal rock, etc.....
right now I'm into "theory of a deadman". I've got a Rhapsody account and like to change my music to fit my mood. For the past week I've been into "theory of a deadman" Bad Girlfriend. which is an excellent song by the way..

But my question is ...What are the other Planetteers listening to???

Unearth's The Stings of Conscience is as good as metalcore can get. I didn't care for TOS or anything after. I had a chance to see them a handful times, twice at the El Torreon and once at The Spitfire (now Korruption), by far one of the better metal shows I've seen. I'm an old timer as well, and the subgenre catagories can get a bit ridiculous, but with the hundreds of metal albums that come out each week, the sub-catagories are necessary to keep me from wasting my time on something I know I won't like.

Right now I'm revisiting Engorged's Where Monsters Dwell in prep for their '09 release House of Cthulhu. For some old style thrash I'm jamming Funerot's Invasion From The Death Dimension.

Stupid lyrics like "make you more strong" really turned me off to, but so far I've only heard the 2 songs they play on Sirius. Neither of which I could get into. I don't mind stupid content or even childish crap like SoaD used to do, but some things just grate. That "make you more strong" line just makes me cringe.

Exactly what childish crap are you referring to? Their first album is the only one really worth a shit.

Some of the sing-song stuff. Serg (however you spell it) has got great vocals, but he uses it like a kazoo at a carnival some times. Pretty much all the stuff off Mezmerize would be a good example. I actually like the album, but I don't get into it. It's kind of like a Weird Al type of music for me. Something good for a chuckle and a quick smile that I might listen to when the player is on random.

Yeah, I guess metal is no longer a bunch of bootlegged tapes getting passed around between fans. In high school we used to go to this tiny ass little place called Pirate Records. Seriously, it was maybe a 30' by 10' store with nothing but used tapes and some of the new stuff that you could actually buy like Metallica and Slayer. Absolutely nothing but metal. That was pretty much it. There really was no music scene where I was.

There was really no need for different genres. We pretty much listened to everything and categorized as suck and not suck.

Oh well, I'll have to check out some of Unearth's earlier stuff like Stings of Conscience. So what the hell is "metal-core"? I checked out some reviews of Straight Line Stitch because I liked the song she did with the guy from Hatebreed (jasta?), but everybody panned it as "nu-metal". Sounds like I'm a fan of "pop" or something.

Don't know the names of the songs. I heard a new one (to me) on the radio last night. My Apocalypse. Honestly, I actually really enjoyed the music. Unfortunately James sang a LOT on this one, pretty much ruining it. I really tried to have an open mind and listen to the whole thing.

I was rewarded by that super cringe causing drawing out of apoca-LLLLLIIIIIPPPPSSSS at the end.

Too me metalcore is what the name implies, a form of metal with elements of hardcore. Unearth is a good example with use of metal riffs with some breakdowns and occassional gang vocals. It seemed to evolve as hardcore bands started to become more metallic with their riffs. I like both metal and hardcore, but I like them both seperately, its hard for me to find metalcore bands that I like, old Unearth is one of them. Both metal and hardcore purists can get rather pissy when it comes to the blend in styles.

I also used to trade tapes back in the day and I also relied heavily on the section in Metal Maniacs where people would write in and list the bands that they were into.

Absolutely.
You guys knew I'd be there; I started and bumped the Opeth and Children of Bodom concert threads.
I hope they (Opeth) come back.
