High Cholesterol

Had my blood work done Monday, get a call from the doctors office at 5:30 stating they need to talk to me ASAP, but would not tell me what about. SOB's had me thinking the worst all night, BS to say the least.

Ended up being high cholesterol, and when I say high I mean like 740's. I am 32, seems like something could be off, but they are giving me meds and told me to diet for 3 months and would check again.

Anyone dealt with this shit before? I know I need to get back in shape. Don't like salads, or much fruit. Any advise would be great.

Be careful with your alcohol intake, you guys. I'm not sure how much you can drink while on statins, but all the drugs in that group are hard on your liver and over time, taking them + drinking = bad news. Not saying that you shouldn't drink at all, just be careful and talk to your MD or RPh, see what they have to say.

So is this statin bad for you overall? Since it seems hard on the liver? I just want to be put on a strict diet to help instead of just told i need drugs

I already have started a lighter diet 2 weeks ago and am able to control that just fine, i guess i can do the same with my 2x a month acohol consumption if need be

Well, ALL prescription medications are poisons by definition, the trick is to dose them in a way that they do more good to you than bad. If they weren't poisons, they would be OTC and wouldn't be strictly controlled by prescriptions. Shit, even then, ****ing Tylenol is DEADLY to your liver if you take too much in even as little as over a few days.

Like I said, talk to your MD or pharmacist, they'll let you know what you can and can't do. Also, don't fret too much, lol. People live out long lives on statins, without which your life can be cut short in a split second or even worse can cripple you in the worst ways.

My doctor, who's head of Internal Medicine at UCLA never even cautioned me before beginning Simvastatin nearly three years ago. And we fully discussed my alcoholic intake (2-3 drinks per night, maybe 4 on the weekends).

The most important thing to monitor is your muscle enzymes. If you're taking a statin and suddenly have muscle cramps and pain that you hadn't had before, you must tell your doctor immediately.

Make sure you have your blood checked every month for the first three months, then at six, then yearly after. If everything is fine and you feel fine, you'll be okay.

Well, statins can cause elevated transaminases. However, your doctor is a million times more qualified than me, and you should listen to him. That goes without saying.

lol, i hear what you are saying. I def. will ask my dr, he already knows I socially drink from time to time but never mentioned anything about the alcohol part to me when the med was prescribed, just told me to eat better and get some exercise.

Well, i'll be working out and running alot more to help my cholesterol and weight loss so i'll keep an eye out for any unusual pain, thanks. As for drinks the most i consume is like 6 total a month lol, so i should be good there.

Quit drinking/eating lard and exercise regularly. Oh yeah take the medication they give u religiously.

Well, like I told Dane, listen to your doctor and not me. If he knows you drink from time to time and didn't say anything, he feels you're safer than safe.

I understand that statins can cause issues, which is why a good doctor will have a blood test at one month, three months, six months and yearly thereafter when beginning treatment.

Very true, i will def. ask him specifically but I can understand the possible issues, maybe for more so for people that drink alot all the time, which im surprised he didn't say anything to me about it i just had to look it up on the net. Appreciate you taking time out to respond, thanks.

Yeah, well, my doctor has a private practice, went to John Hopkins med and he sends me hand written notes too. Well, I've only seen him like 3 times and he sent me a hand written note after the 3rd time. LOL.

My doctor is a family friend as well and wants a check up at the latest with me after 3 months but mentioned i should try to get in sometime after the first month like yours said.
