Yup.

Went from tossing radiators to watching inmates to a desk job.

I'm now fat, lazy, and damned proud to have accomplished it...

Denver rookie QB John Elway, on Jack Lambert, after Lambert and the Steelers knocked Elway out of his first game as a pro (1983).

My weight yo-yo's quite a bit because I run a lot but I also will get careless with my diet, which can be brutal if I have an injury that reduces how much I run. Usually I'm in the husky if not downright fat zone, but I have spent a brief period in the "normal weight" BMI zone. In the past 2.5 months or so, I've been consciously trying to reduce my BMI and have lost about 25 pounds. As of this morning, my BMI is 28.9 (6'2", 225 pounds), which is overweight, but I wouldn't say I am "fat", although I'm not too far away. Right now, I have a 46-inch chest and a 39-inch waist, a resting pulse rate in the 40s (beats per minute) and jog 30 to 35 miles a week. Still, I'd like to get the BMI back down to around 27 or so and lose at least another inch or two of abdominal fat, to lower my diabetes risk. Although a fairly crude measure ( body weight divided by the square of height, espressed in kilograms divided by square meters), it is the case that having a BMI that is larger than 25 {overweight is 25 to 30 and obese is 30+} is associated with some conditions that can seriously reduce health related quality of life. Abdominal fat is not a good thing from the standpoint of trying to avoid type-2 diabetes, for example. BMI has a moderate correlation with abdominal fat, which is part of the reason why epidemiologists use BMI to monitor the general health of a population.

Here's a useful table that shows the risk for certain chronic conditions associated with different combinations of waist circumference and BMI category:
http://www.nhlbi.nih.gov/health/publ...wt/bmi_dis.htm

The NHLBI site also has some other important info about the BMI and its limitations. It's not perfect, but it's fairly useful.

Also, don't be too discouraged if you have a high BMI. Even modest reductions in weight can pay off in lower health risk.
