PFT: Unhappy with Chiefs, Houston hopes to attract an offer sheet

Quote:
Mike Florio, ProFootballTalk

It’s highly unusual for franchise players to be signed to offer sheets, because teams regard any unused first-round picks as potential Hall of Fame players. Chiefs linebacker Justin Houston could become the exception, for various reasons.

First, he enters the process after completing a 22-sack season. No player with that kind of performance has been available on the heels of it, with or without compensation.

Second, he’s motivated to move on. Per multiple sources, Houston is very upset with the Chiefs. It’s believed that he’ll actively solicit an offer sheet in the hopes the Chiefs won’t match it.

Houston under the tag will be a bargain - just think of it as a three-year deal worth 51 million, with each year guaranteeing on the franchise tag deadline.

Year 1 - 13.1 Mill
Year 2 - 15.6 Mill
Year 3 - 22.7 mill

The D-Line was a solid group anchored by Poe, but they weren't "very good", and the secondary was a collection of scrubs and kids just learning that were made to look better than they are by the pass rush of Houston and a declining Hali.

Houston and Poe are the lynchpins.

I don't think Segal (Houston's agent) is a terrible agent or anything. I think he is trying to capitalize for a client who wants the most money they can get. Segal has been around for a long time (his first major football client was Dale Carter in 1992) and has a large number of NFL clients.

You can tag three years:
Year 1 is the average of the top 5 salaries at the position.
Year 2 is a 20% raise
Year 3 is a 44% raise.

I thought only QBs can be tagged a 3rd year. Maybe the new CBA changed it?

Edit:

YES, Nightfyre is correct, the new CBA is 3 years... First year = average of top 5 for exclusive or cap percentage rule for non-exclusive (last 5 franchise amounts/last five salary caps = cap percentage, cap %*new salary cap = non-exclusive tender), Second year = 120% of first year, Third year = 144% of 2nd year.

You know... when Houston held out last season I can only assume Dorsey told him to prove his worth and he'd get paid afterwards. Twenty-two sacks later he's back at the negotiating table and Dorsey stares back at him with his dick in his hand saying "business is business."

Color me surprised that Houston is pissed.

I frankly doubt he is going to leave an 820,000 paycheck sitting on the table.

Any team that gives up two first rounders and 15 million + is foolish.

The only team that I really see taking a shot out this that would concern me are the Colts because:

1) They pick 29th this year - their first round pick has almost the least value of any this year;

2) They're pretty much guaranteed to pick around the same spot next year;

3) They are $38 million under the cap and can afford the kind of contract Houston will want;

4) They have a need at the position;

5) Their owner is just the kind of fool who would do this kind of a deal - which would certainly be less foolish than the Trent Richardson trade (if that provides a benchmark for just how stupid the guy is).

It has been said already, but Houston won't get an offer sheet until after the draft.

Unless it is the Colts who have a late first-round pick this year. Anyone hoping for an Oakland or Jacksonville first pick see Nightfyre's response above.

Of course, an Oakland/Jacksonville pick in 2016 probably won't be much better than the one they're getting this year.

Quick question to those who would know better than me here: Could the Colts trade their 2nd this year and 2nd next year to get the Pats 1st this year and use that as the second 1st rounder? In that way they get Houston for a 1st and two 2nds?

I hope he gets what he wants, just not here. Houston will never have a 22 sack season again. Oh, and Hali better start bitching in a ref's ear about all the holds he endures or Chiefs should just unload him too.
