Alex Smith: Chiefs' offensive strategy will look much different this year

Quote:
Alex Smith says the Kansas City Chiefs are always changing and in a way he's right. The Chiefs offense will change. The personnel, however, doesn't seem to be changing around him as much as other teams which is a good thing.

Alex was asked about this being his fourth year and how the Chiefs offense changes as the team's personnel changes.

"For sure, especially with Coach Reid, nothing's chiseled in rock," Alex said via quotes from the Chiefs. "We are constantly changing and constantly trying to get better. He grinds over using the talent we have and how can we make it better and put guys in good situations and take advantage of strengths. We're always changing."

The Chiefs found out last year that they have a lot of talent at running back after Jamaal Charles went down. It makes me wonder if the offense will change in a way to highlight that strength at running back.

"I think they spent a lot of time after the season," Alex continued, "looking back at the entire collection of last season, all the snaps and really, what is our identity, where do we need to go from here, what are we good at, what do we need to maybe kick out of the offense, what do we need to add on, build on, things like that. I feel like it's constantly changing."

I found this interesting: Alex said they looked at the tape of their first OTA session last year. "Very, very different the install that went in today, very different than last year's install." Hmm.

"And then obviously there's going to be a big change when you add (Matt) Nagy and (Brad Childress) in there," Alex said. "They've spent a lot of time this offseason, really, I think, trying to clean that stuff up with Coach Reid. You're always changing."

What's not changing that much is the Chiefs personnel. Jeremy Maclin is back again. Both Jamaal Charles and Travis Kelce - along with Alex and Maclin, the Chiefs most important offensive players - are going into their fourth year together. Albert Wilson is going into his third year. Chris Conley in his second year. There's some continuity on offense.

I've maintained for awhile now was the best year of his career and he'll never be any better.

The decline in his rushing yards this year has led to a severe uptick in sacks. I think he's physically declining.
I agree. Going back a few years, our offensive line looked horrible with Cassel. Cassel goes down, Orton comes in, and the same O-line suddenly looked like a real NFL O-line.

Alex rolls out into the arc the OTs are trying to ride defenders around the pocket in, and gets sacked as a result, more than any QB I've ever seen outside of David Carr.

The guy lacks the ability to step up into the pocket while keeping his eyes downfield.

God dammit. I hadn't even seen this play until now. This sack is 100% on the QB.

Best part is if he steps up into that pocket, Maclin has a 1v1 over the top probably for a TD.

Explain yourself. It was a poorly designed play. Who was he supposed to throw the ball to? I guess he could have thrown it OOB, but there wasn't a play to be made there.

I missed the entire first possession basically and wow, run out of what would have been a perfectly good pocket you scared pussy

And looking at the all 22, Conley was wide open. Hysterical.

Gee, ya think?

Ever wonder why he's been sacked nearly 3 times a game on average over the last six years no matter the OL?

Now look what a real QB does. None of these receivers are Alex Smith open and yet he's firing away.

I hope Dane and all the other people flaming on Schwartz look at that gif and realize that it's Alex causing most of the sacks/pressures.

He just runs right into a pressure when Schwartz keeps the DL out of he pocket.

Leave it to Alex to attempt the more difficult throw to Ware when Kelce is wide open. Good try buddy.
