No way. Having a true shut down closer in the playoffs is huge. It makes teams play under pressure they wouldn't normally feel.

I don't think that closers are necessarily overrated; I also wouldn't have tried to support such a statement with a contract that clearly overrated a particular closer's value.

Shutdown closers are a luxury that only playoff teams should pay for. If you are not going to compete, you should trade off the Joakim Soria's of the world while they still have value.

If we were not going to be competitive next season we should obviously trade Holland, have Davis close, and then trade Davis at the deadline after playoff teams start ringing our phone.

However, since we are going to be competitive, its not automatically correct to trade them off. If we could improve our lineup by trading Holland, I might be willing to do it, but I'm not just going to trade them off for long-term value if it does not improve the club right away in 2015.

I didn't say closers weren't valuable, I said they were over valued.

From another forum, arguing about the Shields trade:

Quote:
that logic is so flawed, ignoring that Odorizzi costs nothing, Myers costs nothing, Shields costs 12m, Royals couldve easily gotten the same expected wins by not doing the trade, investing the money in someone like Hughes or Santana and still would have 4-5 years of Myers and Odorizzi left

but yeah, you rolled the dice and hit, so understand the happiness from Royals fans, but come on, be reasonable about the trade
Thoughts?
