The best AAA veterans who aren't good enough to break into MLB can top out at roughly $60K or so. A few guys might get a bit more than that. Thats the ceiling, single-A rookies usually get about $5,000. AA players might get $6-7K. They usually need either a spouse/girlfriend who works, or they sometimes live with families who agree to put them up for the season.

Nelson Cruz to the Orioles, 1/8MM. Thats got to sting. Thats 2 players now who declined a QO and later had to sign a 1 year deal for less.
The Orioles might be a good fit for Santana, they are now giving up both their 1st and 2nd round picks, and I don't think they have anything else left to lose.

I'm a big believer in Manaea. They were confident the hip labrum issue could be easily dealt with before they drafted him, and we'll see this year if they're right. If they were, I think he's a top 25 guy on all the lists next year. (Remember, this is the kid that most thought was the No. 1 overall pick before the 2013 college season started). Quote:

I think this has to spell the end of Amaro up there. Just an epic-level disaster, and I'm not sure he can escape it.

I don't want to overstate the fallout though, agents are still going to deal with them for free agents and college seniors, and obviously once they draft someone, the kid has to talk to them the agent just has to be very careful. However, if I'm an agent, and my client is a high schooler or college junior who is still wrestling with the decision to go to school or not and he's not 100% sure he wants to go pro yet, there is no way in hell I let the Phillies get anywhere near him before the draft. Thats going to hurt their ability to figure out who is signable. It would be different if several teams started snitching on their players but right now its just the Phillies. The other 29 teams are willing to cooperate, so to hell with 'em. edit: the Phillies just released a tersely-worded statement that managed to say nothing but the obvious. I read the statement as, "yeah we did it, so what? don't like it? Bite me!" The reaction from the media is pretty brutal, CBS called the Phillies "a pretty pitiful organization top to bottom"

Update from ST:
Andy McCullough @McCulloughStar 2m Chen broke Butler's bat in BP. Chen took the bat, signed a message that includes "I own you," and left it in bathroom for Butler to find. |

@Ken_Rosenthal Santana would rather sit out until after draft than accept deal similar to Cruz’s. Comp pick disappears.
Probably a bluff, but gamble if he does it. I'd fire his agent if it were me. |
