LNBS: What if Dorsey extends Alex for 3-4 years at backup compensation...

Please read op before voting.

I thought about this earlier today...

I highly doubt any team out there is going to give Alex very much in FA in terms of making a commitment to him as the starter. More than likely, he will have a hard time getting more than a 2 year deal on the open market, and not for top dollar.

Let's say John Dorsey sits down with Alex and they hammer out a deal that lowers Alex's cap this year and next and keeps him in KC as the backup to finish his career. Maybe the next 3-4 years.

Something like 4 years for 35-40 million dollars with a signing bonus similar to his 17m cap hit for 2017.

Cap hits by year (projected)

10
13
7
7

The deal would be contingent on Alex understanding that a big part of the contract is helping to groom Mahomes to be the starter and that the majority of the contract he will be played out as a backup.

Honestly, I think this would be a wise move for Alex and Dorsey.

It would create cap space for the team. That's huge with contracts for guys like Jones, Peters, Ford, Hill and others coming up in the next 3 years.
It would provide the team with great stability at the position, regardless of injuries. The team would need to get a backup. What better get backup than Alex Smith? Seriously, he would be the perfect premium backup for a Super Bowl team.

The more I think about the details about Alex's departure from KC the more I think he may end up retiring if he doesn't get offered a deal similar to the one I suggested.
Absolutely, he'll have trade value. What that level will be is an unknown, but he's a starting caliber QB in the NFL, even if it is bottom 3rd, so it's likely around a 3rd. All the team has to do is give him permission to speak with other teams about a new deal. It wouldn't be something new in the NFL. Also, it's not like teams that are desperate haven't paid for 1-year rentals at QB anyhow.

In an offense that's tough to learn, do you want your backup QB to also be a rookie that's not only learning everything from the ground up, but also likely wanting to try to earn playing time?...cause the FA pool of QBs is gonna be very thin. Go peek at overthecap.

Don't want to give Alex 7m per to be the backup?

Ok, but give me some alternatives.
I'd have to say my list would be Matt Moore, Mark Sanchez, Derek Anderson, Case Keenum, or re-sign Bray.

Right before the draft Dorsey was asked about that comment and said he was focused on the draft 100% and would discuss those kinds of things after the draft.

Lol

Yeah "why pay Alex 7 when we can pay Derek Anderson or Mark Sanchez?"

It looks like the Chiefs were working with Joel Stave at rookie minicamp. Big kid with a good arm and pro style knowledge.

Keep him on the PS a year and then make him the backup in 2018.

If Alex gets cut or retires, I'd prefer KC to give Bray a 3 year extension as the primary backup and then draft another QB next year in the last 3 rounds.

Gotta keep some experience in the system in that QB room.

I'd rather pay them 2 than Alex 7.

Again, this isn't hard. Once mahomes takes over, you need to use his cheap rookie deal to surround him with as much talent as you can. Not a backup qb

Exactly, paying that much to your backup defeats some of the benefits of playing a young guy.

7m is peanuts for a guy that can teach Pat a ton about the game from a players perspective and provide quality play if Pat were to go down for a month.

Especially for a team trying to win a title and chasing a bye or HFA.

It's the difference between paying peters 10 and 17 million.

Or you could miss out on a pretty good guard, a starting rb, a #3 wr...

Who did Russell Wilson have mentoring him? Jason Campbell and Matt Flynn?

That sure didn't seem to hold him back.

I can guarantee Alex Smith DOES NOT want to lose that salary in '18.

That's a ton of money, no matter how unselfish people claim he is.

Here goes Alex again, tearing the kingdom apart as usual. The drafting of a QB was supposed to kill this nonsense.

Best to get rid of the taint, asap.
