A couple years a go i worked with this lady that wanted to quit. I felt she wasn't all in on it actually but kept encouraging her to just do it.

Finally she came in and said she is quiting, and she only had one smoke on the way to work. Come to find out she had 2 of the patches on her. Guess what she still went out on break and smoked. She said the patches didn't do a thing.

She did that for a few days and blamed the patches for not working.

Unbelievable. I had to give her a hard time after that.

I talked to this guy that was sent to a prison in Illinois for a year. Vandalia Correctional Center to be specific. He went in for stealing. (he was innocent of course) He said all kinds of people go in addicted to smokes, meth, crack, alcohol you name it. And their first few days and weeks are painful. Cold sweats and the like. Forced to quit with you new found friends witnessing it.

That might be a way to consider quitting them if you just can't quit them any other way, just saying.

It never ****ing fails that whenever I try to do something to better myself, someone or something annoys the shit out of me. I just have way too much stress right now. And, sadly, smoking is the only thing that calms my nerves.

I'm not going to give up and never try to quit again. I will try again. I just need things to calm down, people to do their ****ing jobs, a puppy to quit pissing and shitting on the floor, and the annoying idiots in my life to jump off of an aids bridge.

/sigh

I'm not 100% sure, but I think that nicotine does not really calm you down in a strictly physical sense. I think it's a placebo effect type thing with smokers. A lot of the time we just associate stress relief with smoking a cigarette.

Having said that, placebo effects can certainly have a high efficacy so cigarettes can certainly relieve stress in people. But what I'm trying to say here is that maybe you can learn to associate a different activity with stress relief? I know it's way easier said than done, but you really have to arm yourself with a bunch of mental weapons when it comes to dealing with that shitty ****ing addiction.

It's a mental thing. I agree. I've been smoking for so long that my body craves the nicotine in one form or another. Even more so when I'm extremely stressed out. When I don't get enough nicotine, I get the shakes and have anxiety attacks. It can get scary at times.

On top of all of that, I just found out that my LDL cholesterol level is extremely high. I'm suppose to cut-out all fried foods, exercise more, and quit drinking. In other words, I'm in for a complete lifestyle change. If I can just get through the next week or so, I'm going to pick a day and do all of that and try to stop smoking again.

I enjoy smoking cigarettes, but I certainly do not advocate the use of tobacco. You live and then you die, and thanks to modern medicine most people live well past their due. Smoking can be seen as an affirmation of life, but I'm sure there are much healthier ways of obtaining the same affirmation.. Whatever that means.

Been smoking for about six years. Started when I was 30.
I ****ing hate it. It completely owns me right now, and I can't seem to find any willpower to quit.

I smoke roughly a pack of Salem Gold shorts a day. I'm not proud of it. I watched my dad die from his 3rd bout with cancer but I still smoke. I gave it up for 11 years while I was married, bought a pack the day we separated 8 years ago and have been at it again since.

Sorry about your dad. I lost my grandma to esophageal cancer about 20 years ago.

Thanks Lump... you don't have to be sorry though. We all lose loved ones. Dad smoked for 50 years and beat cancer twice. 3rd time got him. Wasn't looking for sympathy. When you smoke you invite it. I know this but addiction has me for now anyway.

Yes, but we lost our loved ones way too soon.

My biggest motivation the next time I quit is going to be my son. He was before, but then I let stress take over my thoughts and I lost my focus. What sucks is I was doing really well and was proud of myself, (even though I was sneaking a few smokes a day), then I got pissed one day and lit up, one after the other.

One of our good friends did the same shit. We were all smokers back in college when we partied our asses off, but she never smoked through all those years despite the fact she was around it constantly. Most of us quit as we got older and had families. Then she gets married, has kids, becomes a nurse... and STARTS SMOKING AT 33 YEARS OLD. WTF??

We've all quit years ago, but she's still smoking away.

I know a respitory therapist who can't wait for her smoke break. I've asked her wtf before. She has no good answer. Addiction.
