Sheldon Richardson going to USC

Sheldon Richardson reneges, commits to USC
Share |

BY VAHE GREGORIAN Posted: Thursday, November 11, 2010 2:41 pm

Prized Mizzou football recruit Sheldon Richardson said Thursday he has changed his commitment from MU to Southern California.

Richardson, from Gateway Tech, has spent the last two falls at College of the Sequoias in California after failing to qualify academically at Mizzou. He sat out all but two games this season with a wrist injury that he says he now has recovered from and did not require surgery.

Although Richardson attended MU's Oct. 23 win over then-BCS No. 1 Oklahoma and said "it felt like home," he committed to USC last weekend.

The main reason, he said, was his belief that USC and well-respected defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin would best prepare him for a transition to the NFL after just one season.

He said the fact USC won't be eligible for a bowl next year because of NCAA sanctions didn't bother him.

Richardson, considered a 5-star recruit out of high school, said he still plans to take other recruiting visits, most likely to Miami, California and Arizona State.

He was vague when asked whether he had told MU of his decision yet.

"Uh, back and forth. I'm going to call them later," he said. "It's kind of hard to tell them I'm not going there no more. Or I think I'm not going no more."

Asked if that meant there still was wiggle room in his decision-making, he said, "A little wiggle room."

Wouldn't the fact that KU (and most other big bball programs) play like 70% of their games at home be considered unbalanced?

Every sport has scheduling quirks....

I would tend to agree that non-con basketball falls more under showcase than sport, yes.

But the conference schedule creates a level playing field and the conf/ncaa tourneys create a path for a true champion.

What the new big 10 is doing is just silly.

Does the unbalanced schedule create problems being able to find the games on the TV guide?

A championship decided by a single elimination tournament with a 3 point line that is little more than a glorified free throw from the corner isn't exactly infallible.

And that's more of a debate than your 'point' really deserves.

To claim that College Football isn't a real sport is just assinine.

It's not an insignificant get, but I still wish we could get some DBs that have similar ability. Pinkel needs to stop hoarding some of these WR prospects and put them in the dfensive backfield for a bit.
They targeted that position really hard in recruiting last year.

Tristen Holt is the best DB recruit Pinkel has gotten
EJ Gaines is a solid recruit, but I have no idea as to his potential
Daniel Easterly was an athlete who they converted to safety
Braylon Webb was another target.

4 DBs in one class is pretty heavy, and that doesn't factor in the return of Kip Edwards (who is, arguably, our best corner) or Kenji Jackson.

It's still going to be a weak point, but it's significantly better than it was 3-4 years ago

The DBs are important, but I think the success of this team is going to rise and fall based upon the play of the WRs. Sasser, Lucas, and Hunt have to bring an ability to get open on intermediate routes, because Kemp and Jackson were absolute shit this year.

We also need to hope that two of Demien, Gatti, and Britt can fill one of the guard spots (because Wuebbels and Palmgren are ****ing horrible) and Barnes' center spot. The tackles, shit that they are, are entrenched.

Carl Gettis is gone, that's good enough for me. So is Jasper Simmons.

I actually got my ass chewed by one of Gettis's relatives on Facebook after that Tech loss. I kinda lost my damn mind on facebook after that game; but he earned it. The guy sends me some insane rant about how the players can only run what is called and how Gettis was a baller or something. Standard unintelligble nonsense, really.

(though I still wonder how the hell the guy saw my profile...)

And there's no 'arguably' to it, Edwards is the only quality corner we had this year and he should be even better next season.

The tackles are fine. They aren't perfect, but Hoch and Fisher are a well above average pair of college bookends.

Jackson could get open, but couldn't catch. Kemp simply didn't work hard enough often enough. Yeah, the WRs definitely need to step up. And I'd kill to see us get a RB that can do a little more between the tackles. Y'know, kinda like that Washington fellow we used to have.

I despise Elvis Fisher, but some of that is on me. It's a Safford level of hatred. The guy has a real ability to kill some drives. I wanted to plunge an icepick into his balls after the ISU game.

Gettis being gone is a definite plus. I thought that pick he made against Illinois was a sign that he turned the corner, but really he only improved from a shitload of **** to an assload of ****.

I'm used to getting my heart ripped out at the most inopportune moment, so no.

I do think that we finally will have a team that can go toe-to-toe with Texas and OU and not blink. I don't think we can beat those teams on the road, but I think we could possibly at a neutral site and definitely at Faurot.

We have Texas and Okie Lite at home according to this, but I don't know if that is accurate. There is one open date there during conference on 10/1, which makes me think that we'll be heading to Norman. That'll be a goddamned tough game.

If Gabbert goes pro MU's gonna have a hard time winning the Big12, they may win the North, since Nebraska is gone...but they'll lose to a south team in the championship game.

(which he is entering the draft - BUT, he's just testing the waters for "stock" purposes....he will likely return IMO, he's not pro ready by any means, and he has until Jan 15th to decide if he wants to stay or go)
