Alex Smith Was Clutch

Like him or not, he turned the game around when Washington was kicking our ass early and he was key to the game-winning drive late.

No. He is not elite. Not even his play this year gets that level of credit from me.
He's not an elite QB but he's having an elite season so far.

I think the sack thing might be the fact that generally when we get one, we don't know make the first down, as the next play would be a run of maybe 3 and then a WR screen for 3, then punt. So, maybe not a turn over, but it was ending drives.

I think Reid being a better play caller has a lot to do with Smith being a better QB...

Oh no, man, I get that. It usually is a drive killer for us, but my point was, there are more drives later to come. So, as long as the defense isn't allowing TD after TD scored against us? we can show some patience on earlier drives stalling out. It's frustrating to eat sacks, and not take shots early, but no doubt it has helped us not turn the ball over. It just works.. for now.

Hard to imagine a worse Oline performance than against Washington in the 1st half. Alex Smith held the team together long enough to back the Redskins' defense off and gain momentum for the entire team. I have no idea how well Smith is going to play the rest of the year but the Washington game is about as good as it gets for a QB under fire.

Thank you to Patrick Mahomes II for pushing Alex Smith into playing better than he ever has in his career.

Alex is by far the MVP so far. He is willing his team to victory, making defenses jump offsides and winging that ball to mostly no named players. He's this year's Brady baby!

FOH with this nonsense. Roughly 70% of Alex's passing yards have gone to Kelce, Hill and Hunt.

No named players. SMFH

How long are you going to hold onto this one?

The 2 best games he's played in his entire career have been this season and you're still trying to say that it's just the same guy, but he's being pressed more.

As though he wasn't pressed repeatedly over prior seasons and simply didn't make the play like he made to Wilson. He's had that opportunity a dozen times over the last couple of years and hasn't hit on it. Even when we've desperately needed him to pull a game from the fire, he's been unable to.

He's presently playing as the best possible version of Alex Smith. He's not a different type of quarterback but he's absolutely a different quarterback.

Honestly, I rank this game up there with last year's San Diego and Denver wins. Deadly perfect strikes downfield when we needed them. That throw to Kelce with pressure was brilliant, as was the throw to Wilson for the go ahead field goal.
Every now and then the years spent with Herm make me say something I hate (especially when combined with the Alexisms we've had over the last couple years), but here goes...

That throw to Kelce flipped the field. It was an invisible touchdown. It set up the punter.

{drinks bleach}

No points were scored but it allowed us to finally back up the Redskins a little. And unsurprisingly, they immediately hit a big play and then snagged another 1st down, IIRC. The ended up stalling at around our 40 and were forced to punt. That was the drive we answered with a TD.

If Smith doesn't stand in there, take the hit and get that ball downfield to Kelce, we end up punting from our own 15ish and that quick strike and additional 1st put them right back in the red zone. A healed defense could've easily folded and suddenly we're down 17-0 and the game's almost certainly over.

That play may have been more important than the play to Wilson. It gave them a second to breath and gave the defense enough breathing room to get the 'Skins off the field. Then we answered in the next drive and it was off to the races.

That play may end up forgotten because of the Wilson play but it was every bit as difficult and every bit as critical.

Not a lot of CP people understand this concept about field position and the chess match that coaches are playing.
