HBO greenlights A Game of Thrones pilot! (spoilers)

EDIT: Changed the original header to mark this as the thread where spoilers are allowed (but not necessarily recommended...). Created a new, spoiler-free thread for Ice and Fire virgins...

This is awesome...

Huge, Huge News

Nov. 11th, 2008 at 10:29 PM

HBO has given the production order.

They will be filming the pilot episode of A GAME OF THRONES.

It's just the pilot so far. They'll need to see that before they decide whether to proceed with a full season's episodes. So let's all hope the pilot will kick serious ass.

It should. David Benioff and Dan Weiss did a terrific job with the script. And yes, all of you can relax, it's very faithful. Dan and David will be the executive producers for the pilot and (we hope) the eventual series.

More details when I have 'em. The news is very fresh. HBO just issued their own press release, which should be up on their website soon, if it's not there already.

Winter is coming to HBO. Hot damn.

I don't see how you don't think it could possibly be mentioned as one of the best ever when it ends, unless you are an old fogey that thinks of Cheers and M.A.S.H. as epic TV.

There have only been 3 shows I've CRAVED from week to week. Deadwood, Lost [until it became clear it wasn't going to deliver on it's initial intrigue], and GoT.

Loved The Sopranos and The Wire, but I didn't spend the balance of the week breathlessly waiting for what would happen next. Watched it, had a hoot, turned it off.

Deadwood, The Sopranos, The Wire. My big three. GoT shows promise to join them.

I think Game of Thrones and Breaking Bad are the two best series on the air right now. They're the kind of shows I can sit and watch 3 or 4 hours at a time with undivided attention. And I'm saying that without yet watching the final four episodes of GoT due to work, purportedly the best episodes of the season.

This IS a very good series. Wouldn't change my big 3, but it's just a slight slight slight step down. Agiain, the love versus crave divide. On, hoot, off. Only, I watched the last season all in a row, so. . .

Definitely for best drama/miniseries (however they term it).

I really hope Peter Dinklage (Tyrion) gets a nod for supporting actor. As for actress, you could definitely make cases for Lena Headey (Cersei) and Michelle Fairley (Catelyn). You could also make a case for Emilia Clarke (Daenerys) in her very first role. Sean Bean will probably be put in the best actor category as he did get quite a bit of screen time.

If the quality level stays consistent next season onward, this series could clean up every year they have a season.

I'm all for PD getting an Emmy for this in the supporting category.

Sean Bean IMO is one of the most underrated actors alive today.

I guess the thing I'm most impressed with, though, is how well-received this series has been by the "normal" television viewer. The salon.com critic is putting it in the same category as The Sopranos or Deadwood and thinks people will quote GoT in the future thesame way they quote The Godfather now.

In the comments sections of the article, there are tons and tons of people offering huge praise for the series often prefaced with, "I'm not a fan of fantasy, but...."
