HBO has given the production order.

They will be filming the pilot episode of A GAME OF THRONES.

It's just the pilot so far. They'll need to see that before they decide whether to proceed with a full season's episodes. So let's all hope the pilot will kick serious ass.

It should. David Benioff and Dan Weiss did a terrific job with the script. And yes, all of you can relax, it's very faithful. Dan and David will be the executive producers for the pilot and (we hope) the eventual series.

More details when I have 'em. The news is very fresh. HBO just issued their own press release, which should be up on their website soon, if it's not there already.

Winter is coming to HBO. Hot damn.

Jon Snow not being Ned's son is a definite theory that people have. Many have him being the son of Ned's sister, Lyanna, and Rhaegar Targaryen, though.

There are a ton of clues througout the books that seem to indicate that Jon's parents are Rhaegar and Lyanna, and that it was most likely a product of their love, not of kidnap and rape.

Robert says before he dies that even though he defeated and killed Rhaegar in battle, that Rhaegar won because he has Lyanna and Robert is stuck with Cersei. That implies that Rhaegar and Lyanna are together in the afterlife, which obviously would not be likely if he was her kidnapper and raper, so Robert seems to be admitting they loved each other. There are also references to when Rhaegar won the jousting tourney at Harrenhall and gave the queen of beauty prize to Lyanna instead of his own wife which is when Robert began to hate him and the rebellion began to brew.

Most of the clues are in the first book, and ultimitely the books have not revealed the answer for sure yet, so not sure it's a spoiler, but I'll put it in spoiler tags. The best discussion of this topic I have seen is in an essay at the Tower of the Hand site. It gives lots of examples from the text and also looks at the other possibilities for Jon's parentage. But really, when you see all the clues together in one essay like that, it seems pretty likely that his parents are Rhaegar and Lyanna, and the promise Ned made to Lyanna that haunts him throughout the first book was to claim Jon as his own to protect him from Robert's massive hatred of all things Targaryen and the same fate as Rhaegar's other children. It doesn't make much sense that a promise to bury Lyanna at Winterfell (which he did) would really haunt him and cause him guilt like the promises he made to her seem to do repeatedly through the book, so there had to be more to it than just burying her at Winterfell. The essay goes into detail on all of that with lots of quotes from the books.

Thanks, that is very interesting. I've never read books where people theorize on different things such as this. Does GRRM write anything close to as compelling as ASOIAF?

I have not read GRRM's other books, but I agree, it is unique for me to see so much speculation theorizing on a book series. I guess it may have something to do with the fact that it took 6 years for the 5th book to come out, so enthusiasts had ntohing to do but speculate and discuss on message boards and blogs while waiting for the story to continue. And the story has so many characters and subplots that there is much to speculate about, and GRRM has a talent for inserting clues but leaving things ambiguous.

I have read that the Dunk and Egg tales by GRRM are worth a read also. They deal with Westeros, but they take place before Robert's rebellion and the events of ASOIF, so I guess it's a prequel of sorts though the central characters are not the same. I will likely read them after the 5th book comes out and I finish it.

Same kind of thing goes on with the Wheel of Time series, too. All sorts of discussion and debate over the prophesies and dreams and who's who and basically anything else you can think of.
