HBO greenlights A Game of Thrones pilot! (spoilers)

EDIT: Changed the original header to mark this as the thread where spoilers are allowed (but not necessarily recommended...). Created a new, spoiler-free thread for Ice and Fire virgins...

This is awesome...

Huge, Huge News

Nov. 11th, 2008 at 10:29 PM

HBO has given the production order.

They will be filming the pilot episode of A GAME OF THRONES.

It's just the pilot so far. They'll need to see that before they decide whether to proceed with a full season's episodes. So let's all hope the pilot will kick serious ass.

It should. David Benioff and Dan Weiss did a terrific job with the script. And yes, all of you can relax, it's very faithful. Dan and David will be the executive producers for the pilot and (we hope) the eventual series.

More details when I have 'em. The news is very fresh. HBO just issued their own press release, which should be up on their website soon, if it's not there already.

Winter is coming to HBO. Hot damn.

I'm reading the first book right now and am glad I started at the start. Nothing much different so far (just got past the scene where the knifeman comes to kill Bran but gets direwolved instead) but the scenery is richer and you never know what might still be coming.

Easy reading, you can cruise right through it.

No, no, no, don't think of it as work. The whole point is just to enjoy yourself.

I might not call it easy, but it's enjoyable. Lots of characters to try to remember, but it's' not the end of the world if you can't remember them all, you'll still get the main points. I'm reading a second time more slowly and picking up a ton of details I forgot or glossed over the first time through when I read very quickly. It's a very in depth series. For that reason alone I highly recommend you finish reading the first book. There's stuff in there the show did not include that helps bring a fuller picture.

I agree completely. I'm re-reading them now and am picking up a lot more since I'm already familiar with the characters and locations.

One of things I really like about this series is that there really seems to be something for everyone. If you want characters, you can focus on that. If you want political intrigue, there's plenty of that. If you just want to go along for the ride, you can just focus on the major houses. If you want to dig deep and theorize about Jon Snows parentage or Renly's sexuality, you can go as deep as you want (I bet Loras did, ha!).

How does Wheel of Time compare to ASOIF?

Wheel of Time is much longer series at 14 books (after the last one comes out next year). The books average around 850 pages, so the individual books are similar in length to the ASOIF books. Regardless, it's a big undertaking if you want to try and get through the whole thing from the beginning.

The story itself is much more based around the supernatural and "OMG TEH WORLD COULD DIE!!!!", and it's definitely a tale of good vs. evil, unlike ASOIF which blurs the lines between the two considerably.

I personally think that Robert Jordan does a great job of painting pictures of scenes with his words, which is one of the big selling points of the books for many. It was much easier for me to get wrapped up in the WoT books than it has for the ASOIF books just because there's a lot of cliffhangers and drama and less jumping around. However, critics of Robert Jordan would tell you that he tends to ramble on and on at times, describing things in excruciating detail without really advancing the plot.

I'm about halfway through Book 3 of the ASOIF series at the moment, and so far I'd say that I enjoy the WoT books slightly better just because of how much they grabbed me and held me in that world. However, both series are incredibly compelling in very different ways.

The second half of book 3 of ASOIF was my favorite part so far.

I may need to check out Wheel of Time at some point, but 14 books is hard to want to tackle because of the time commitment.

Just finished Clash of Kings...and wow, this series really gets you enthralled, and you have no idea what is going to happen next. I have read that many consider Book 3 to be the best of the bunch, so I am looking forward to it.

I get a better insight into Tyrion in the book then I did in the TV show. His kind side shows through more.
