He and Santana will likely get similar deals on the open market, but I'd honestly feel more confident about 4 years/$60 million for Garza than 4/$50 for Santana. Santana is just so up-and-down... I know what the perception would be in KC, but there are good baseball reasons to be leery of having him a lucrative 4-5 year deal.

Assuming we all agree that we need to replace Santana's innings as well as upgrade the offense, here's the question : Are we more likely to fix the pitching or the hitting with internal solutions? We have finite resources, and my guess is that we aren't going to invest materially in both.
I think we're more likely to replace Santana with an internal option than to improve our hitting. So my vote is that we go find an upgrade offensively out on the market, and rely on our young pitching to bridge the Santana gap. |

The lack of supply is going to drive the demand on him up crazy, he's probably going to be offered a lot more than he's really worth.

Santana seems like a "contract year" performer. You only get his best when he's got a new contract pending. Danny Tartabull was the exact same way in his career.

If anyone wants to hope for a return of Santana, we're obviously going to make him a qualifying offer, and that is going to depress his value a bit. Some team out there might say "screw it" and give him $16-17MM AAV anyway over 4 or 5 years, but if people are leery of losing a draft pick, his value could come down to the point where we re-sign him.

Find another extreme fly ball pitcher who gave up a fluke amount of HRs in a bandbox, and sign him.

I would be fine with him accepting that. It's a one-year commitment at a lot of money, but at least it's not a long-term risk. If he can't repeat, it hurts for 2014 but not for years to come. I have been told Moore said they don't expect the budget to increase for 2014? Anyone else heard/seen that?

He had surgery this week to clean up bone spurs in his elbow. Pretty routine, though anything with that guy of late is cause for concern.
I don't want to try to sign the guy long-term or anything... but it would be a smart risk to get a guy on a short-term deal, IMO. He gets to try to rehab his profile in a great pitcher's park with a great defense behind him and a great catcher calling games for him. Royals get him at a much-reduced price and maybe get a year (or two, if there's an option) of a guy whose upside is that of a borderline staff ace.

This is a key point if we end up out in the market attempting to sign a free agent pitcher. In year's past, we'd be at the very bottom of the list of teams that free agents would have interest. We actually have something to sell now, and that wasn't the case even this time last year.
