So I'm hopping a freighter to China...

Well, actually Vietnam. But I'll make a stop in China.

It just seemed like the thing to do. I'm in Oakland now waiting as they load cargo. I'm the only passenger on a 1,000 foot ship for the next 19 days.

Here's my ship: http://www.marinetraffic.com/en/ais/...:CMA_CGM_RHONE. I got whisked aboard before I could take an exterior photo.

Since I'm the only passenger, I get the owner's cabin on the top deck. Here are a few pictures of my cabin area. I also have the use of a lounge on another floor, and I can share the crew's gym.

So if anybody needs me, I won't be around for the next few weeks as I sail my private 1,000 foot yacht across the Pacific.

As fair warning, there's a big stretch across the Pacific where you don't get updates. So if the ship doesn't appear to be moving, we're not broken down in the Pacific. Well, probably not. I think the updates start showing up again closer to Japan.

Good to know. Probably best if we wait a month or so to report you missing at sea. I hope you paid for the upgraded life boat.

I'm just hoping he will get and be able to send pictures of the kraken before it takes down the ship

So would it be possible for multiple people to do this, or do you have to go alone.

I'd do this in a heartbeat if someone like my brother or a buddy would tag along.

This trip sounds amazing. I’ve seriously often thought when I see those big cargo ships what it would be like to go across the ocean on one. I’m sure that I’ve over-romanticized it. Just something about the raw power and massiveness of the ocean.

They have multiple cabins, so it would be easy for a group.

I just learned that I'm only the second passenger on this ship in four months and the other one was on a short hop of less than a week. This came from a guy who just joined the crew four months ago, so it appears that there's little competition for cabins. He said he was on another ship before this, and on that ship (don't know the route), the cabins were often half full on short trips. The trans-ocean trips apparently draw few passengers. I suspect it's because of the lack of soda machines.

Maybe you should have had a shipping container with all your provisions so when you need something you just run down and get what you need!
