Unsubstantiated Rumor: It will be Bill Cowher as Head Coach in 2009

OK gang, as you all know, A friend of mine from high school is good friends with a former player of the Chiefs and Steelers... just talked with him on Facebook and he said that 100% that Cowher will be the coach next year. The assistants have been told to find other employment and they are at the senior bowl with Pioli and he is seeing which assistants/scouts that may be worth keeping.

Cowher loves the new facilities... working with Scott Pioli... the new attitude... & he wants to be able to come to KC and be the hero.

Apparently, Cowher drafted this former player and they remain good friends. And Cowher told him these things... allegedly.

My friend isn't a big bullshitter... but this would seem to be too good to be true.

cowher and pioli have the makings of a very good organization that players would LOVE to play for...

so, I'd say 80% that this happens... flame away if you like... but, I thought I'd share.

Since I used those words in the last hour, I assume this is aimed at me.

It's not that I desire a coordinator or something, I just want to eliminate the looser (ChiefsPlanet spelling) virus from this team. I consider anyone involved in the previous 20 years to be tainted.

That said, regardless of who Pioli picks, Im just glad that NO ONE on this BB has any say in that decision.

I am going to trust whatever Pioli decides.

On a side note though. The one problem I have with bringing in a up and comer, without a history of winning, is that with this team that has gotten so used to losing, I think it may be hard to get them all to buy into what he is selling. I proven coach might bring in a winning mentality right from the get go.

Like I said though, I am good for whatever he decides, unless that decision is Herm (which won't happen).

True that last part. It wasn't aimed at you, rather a prevailing point of view I've seen from many here that don't want to go after the "retread". It's very similar to the sentiment I've seen over the last few years that instead of going out and getting someone else's QB, we draft and develop our own guy, mainly because we were tired of mediocre QB's. But we just ended up with our own crappy QB, so we lost anyway.

To me, the bottom line is that if Pioli knows what he is doing, then hopefully he'll bring in the right coach for this organization and himself to win, and be that a new guy or a retread, doesn't matter. As long as it ain't Herm, Gunther, or anyone else who is here now...

Fair enough...Cowher does not excite me, but I figure Ive got to give Pioli some benefit of the doubt for now.

To me, Cowher makes sense because if you want a big, strong, tough football team like Pioli mentioned, that's what Cowher brings to the table, along with a Super Bowl ring, so he brings the success that these guys who are used to losing can immediately buy into and work hard on. He also will weed out the losers. In short, he's got experience putting together a tough football team and he can instill that toughness and the Pittsburgh profile that Hunt wants better than anyone. And again, he always brings in outstanding assistants on his staff. So he could coach here 6-7 years, bring this team back to relevance if not a Super Bowl, and then if that model is built and he wants to move on, you can go and hire your Tomlin or promote one of his top assistants like Wisenhunt and carry on.

Of course, that's all ideal. Probably won't happen that way. Still, the fact that they haven't dismissed Herm makes me wonder if Pioli isn't just trying in the background to see if he can get someone like Cowher or Rat to take the job, otherwise he sticks with Herm for another year. It otherwise is making no sense that Herm is still here unless he's plan C. If Clark is paying for the top GM candidate in the league, why would he not want to pay one of the top coaching names in the league? He and Pioli may have already decided that if they get rid of Herm, it'll only be for one of the big name retreads...

My thinking on the Herm situation is that they are being deliberate for specific reasons. It's a sensitive situation.

I still don't see why they don't just put Herm out of his misery and fire him.

Seriously you can't keep Herm at this point. If you keep Herm you have to give him a contract extension because allowing him to go into next season as a lame duck coach will turn away potential assistant coaches (and Herm would have to essentially rebuild his coaching staff given all the potential defections) and turn away potential free agents.

I can't see Pioli giving a contract extension to a coach he really doesn't want to keep (certainly not beyond next year).

I agree...but it's 'political'...I dont want to go here, just MHO. I think that Pioli and Hunt are dotting the I's and crossing the T's before pulling the trigger. Herm's a lame duck at this point and the team has not responded to him.

Whether it's Cowher or a coordinator, I don't care. As long as Herm and his staff are ****ing gone, I'll be happy.

Oh, and as for who the player is, it might not be Gammon since he's 40 and Ari is (according to his profile, anyway) 35. However, he is from Kansas, and all of Ari's allegiances seem to indicate that Ari is as well. So if Gammon is the source, that means either Gammon isn't a "high school friend" in the strictest sense of the phrase or Ari is lying about his age. And it's possible that Kendall told Nick it wasn't true because he reads the boards and knows that Nick is a dumbshit.

Brentston Buckner is 37, and thus would be slightly more likely age-wise, but he's from Georgia and Ari doesn't exactly have the southern hospitality and charm of, say, Midnite Vulture.

Alex Van Pelt (38) and Bam Morris (37) are from Pittsburgh and Texas, respectively.

WHO COULD IT BE?!?!
