It's official: Ricky Stanzi will be the No. 2 quarterback in the Kansas City Chiefs second preseason game against the St. Louis Rams. Not the No. 2 for the entire season; just for this game. I said earlier today that I wouldn't be surprised if Stanzi gets the nod simply for the sake of giving him a fair chance with the second team.

Stanzi and Brady Quinn are battling for the No. 2 job and throughout camp there isn't a clear leader. Most would say Quinn has been better but it's not like he's lighting the world on fire.

As the KC Star's Adam Teicher notes, the fact that Stanzi gets the nod as the No. 2 in Saturday's game shows that this thing isn't over. Stanzi still has a shot. Maybe not a great one but still a shot.

Danny Parkins made a good point on 610 Sports today about this. Stanzi hasn't been given many opportunities to work with the second team in game action. If this is a true competition then Stanzi deserves time with the second team to show what he can do with better talent.

Put this one on your checklist for Saturday night. We'll be watching the backup battle closely.

I disagree. I think the anti-Stanzi people realize Cassel is our only HOPE this year. If a vet QB gets released, I could see us signing them quick. Tavaris Jackson will probably be traded somewhere by next Monday.

I want someone other than Cassel but Cassel is the best we have. It's a catch 22.

yes, but Stanzi having success doesn't necessarily mean that Cassel loses his job. It just means that Stanzi MIGHT develop into something more.

He hasn't even played a single regular season game and you guys are shitting on him. Even if he comes out and goes 0 for infinity, he will still be on this roster next year. If Pioli won't give up on Cassel he sure as shit won't give up on Stanzi after one ****ing year.

You either have to play really really good or get lucky to even get a shot at playing a regular season game in most cases. By the time New England had Cassel, they were transitioning and just starting to rebuild. They won two Superbowls with Flutie and Huard as the #2 and #3. I like this formula better. They let Huard walk when their chances of winning a Superbowl went down.

Again, we are in a position to make a real run. I don't believe Stanzi is the answer. If it were up to me, I would try and trade Bowe and stock pile picks for next year. If Cassel has a great year like I think he will, I would keep him. Then, move up in the draft and get a QB that we could really start to groom behind him.

Look man, when you are a late round draft pick, you have to show something which brings me back to my point. Stanzi had better show something.
