Report: Chiefs give Branden Albert permission to meet with Dolphins

With the Chiefs considering a trade that would send left tackle Branden Albert to Miami in exchange for one of the Dolphins’ second-round draft picks, Kansas City has taken a big step toward getting a deal done by giving Albert permission to meet with the Dolphins.

Albert signed his one-year, $9.8 million tender offer as the Chiefs’ franchise player, which means he’s under contract and only permitted to talk to other teams if the Chiefs grant him that permission. And according to John Clayton of ESPN, that’s exactly what has happened: The Chiefs have given the Dolphins permission to talk to Albert, who lives in Miami, and he is expected to visit the Dolphins’ facility and take a physical.

The Dolphins are the only team that has received permission from the Chiefs to talk to Albert. Any team that would trade for Albert would surely want him to agree to a long-term contract first, so this week’s visit will presumably include negotiations with Albert’s agent in addition to a physical.

A high second-round pick is reportedly the price tag the Chiefs have put on Albert. The Dolphins have two second-round picks, their own (No. 42 overall) and the Colts’ (No. 54 overall).

Miami wants to upgrade at left tackle after losing Jake Long to the Rams. The top three left tackles in this year’s draft (Luke Joeckel, Eric Fisher and Lane Johnson) are all likely to be off the board before the Dolphins’ first-round pick, No. 12 overall, comes up. So if the Dolphins are going to make that upgrade, trading for Albert is probably a better bet than relying on a rookie.

This team hasn't been "good enough" in two decades, which is the last time they made consecutive playoff appearances. Anyone expecting an automatic turnaround or "Worst to First" scenario will likely be disappointed.

A consistently competitive team would be more than welcome at this point. All this talk of "Super Bowls" is nonsense when the franchise hasn't won a playoff game in 20 years.
There are no signs to me that this team is working to build toward a SB. That's still the goal, no?

Obviously, this goal is going to have to be realized in stages, most likely, but acquiring 29-year-old QBs who are average at best keeps a window pretty damn tight.

Now, recent history shows that damn good QBs can be available outside of round one. Perhaps Dorsey has identified one of these players, and that's the plan.

I'm not Geno or bust, but I am, "These ****s better be right or GTFO." If we have no QB, we have no chance, and right now there isn't a championship QB on the roster. Perhaps next weekend will change this.

Don't like what has happened in the last 20 years?

Well at least in Alex Smith the team has the latest version of Cassel, Thigpen, Huard, Green, Grbac, Gannon, Bono, Montana, Kreig, DeBerg, Kenney, Fuller and Livingston in place!

They are good to go!

The "Ultimate Goal"? Sure. The goal for 2013? No way.

This team was a ****ing laughing stock in league circles. A joke. The fans revolted and it wasn't just a local story. The Hunt family was embarrassed by the events of the 2012 season.

So far in 2013, the league (NFL office, other teams, players, agents, etc.) have been impressed by what Reid and Dorsey have accomplished. The fans (other than the "fans" that post on Chiefsplanet) appear to be happy as well.

With the goal of fielding a competitive team in 2013, the Chiefs acquired the best option possible.

I could see Dysert, Bray and Barkley as developmental QB's but all of them will need at least a year on the bench, if not two, before being NFL ready.

If there's a championship QB in this draft, it'll shock the hell out of everyone. Otherwise, trading the #1 overall pick would be a piece of cake.

I'm sure that Dorsey left perennial contendership in Green Bay hoping to get the reigns in Kansas City, so he could churn out 8-8 finishes. That's what ever mid level front office guy dreams of when he breaks into the NFL, right?

And I am equally certain that Andy Reid came here after making prior Super Bowl appearances and fielding a team that was usually contending in the hopes of just playing out some 8-8 years before he rides off into the sunset.

It's funny how anyone who lands here becomes beholden to the Hunt family's desire to win no more than 8 games and never ever try to win a Super Bowl as soon as they arrive isn't it?

I mean, winning the Super Bowl wouldn't make Clark any money, he just needs to keep the stadium full and not win too much.

Do you dorks listen to yourselves?

If we come out of the first two rounds with a quarterback, I'll be a happy camper.
