He'll stroke the guests some, but he's the least fawning over the flavor-of-the week stars. And if an interview is going shitty, he'll basically say that it's going shitty and make fun of it.
Melman and Elliot set the tone for everything that came after IMO, they were brilliant with the absurdity.

And the second sentence is why I love Dave so much, to add to that, if a guest is being some kind of diva or get chippy withy his questions he'll make them look like flat out fools... he's the least fawning of all of them.

Like 'Human DVRs' - it's that thing where a midget sits on your TV and tell you what happened on Scandal.

Tough to write it more wittily as it's a necessary structure to let Stefon explain his terms, but it got monotonous over time [Seth's part, not Stefon's]

I love Bill Hader but I was never a fan of the Stephon character. Meyers won me over with his performance at the wh correspondents dinner a couple of years ago. Part of why I became a fan of Seth Meyer was I was getting sick of the constant fawning over Tina Fey and Amy Poehler I was glad when they were both gone

I'm glad that The Magic Hour existed, if for no other reason than to give Howard Stern a week of material busting on it. That was some classic radio.

I remember Arsenio from when (I think) he began subbing for Joan Rivers. I was pretty young, but he was so funny to me then.

My theory is that his show was soooo based on style, and he or his people did a poor job keeping up with the style. Say what you will about how milquetoast late night guys can be, and I'll criticize it all day long, but it keeps that from happening.

I dug this thread up to bump it and say...wow. Somebody posted a clip from Fallon's Tonight Show on my FB feed and I was cracking up. I started following it and there seems to be a ton of great stuff already.

I think Fallon will be able to do some great things here. I think Conan was doing well as well but the truth remains that it's going to take something spectacular to turn the viewing back to the free three. Incorporating the internet (and bringing in the generation that has known nothing but in the process) is the key. He's doing that well.

I agree, so far he's done very well. Kudos to him! Whatever it takes to keep the Letterman down...
