Cash bar or foot the bill? Wedding poll

So we're attending a wedding in STL in a few weeks, and instead of footing the bill themselves, it's a cash bar.

What are your thoughts on this?

I kinda think if youre having a big fancy all weekend kinda wedding, pay for the bar tab, but I get it I guess, miney wise.

So, what say you?

Update: read announcement, open bar, all is well

My youngest brother had a cash bar. It pretty much pissed me off to the point where I opened a $500 tab for the guests.

IMO, you don't invite people to your place, to celebrate something in your life, and expect people to pay for their drinks and food.

It's actually a thing that's trending downward. Maybe I just somehow dated girls that thought alike, but they seemed to prefer smaller lowkey ceremony.

I think weddings are overrated for that anyway. If you take any random group of five bridesmaids, one of them is going to be morbidly obese, one's going to be a 14 year-old kid sister, one's going to already be married, and one's going to be a frowner. That only leaves on potential bridesmaid, and based on my experience, she's going to have a boyfriend who wears a fraternity jacket to the wedding and sneaks beer in with a bible flask.

Please don't turn this thread into another one of those vendetta deals. It's been a good conversation so far...

If you do, the tag should be labeled to "Tom and the new one".

Depends on the girl I think.

Luckily, we had our wedding outside at my best friends parents home, said parents own the liquor stores in the small town we grew up up, my mom catered the event herself and my dad performed the ceremony.

We luckily got off easy

If you cant afford to pay for the booze..you should elope. That's the best part of the whole ceremony.

I'm still amazed at the amount of $$ people spend on these things. If you are young...you would be better off starting your life with a down payment on a house.

First off, you're talking out of your ass. My brother's FIL is extremely successful in the healthcare industry and the reception was at Lakewood. It's not like it was at a VFW hall with homemade food and cake (NTTATWWT).

Secondly, his in laws are extremely religious Mormans that don't believe in alcohol use.

But yeah, you're spot on, as usual.

What if the majority of the family and guests don't drink? Why pay for a open bar for a select few, if those who want to drink can have a drink on their own.

Sums up the wedding I was just in. Maid of honor was tall and homely with no personality, one bridesmaid was married with a 4-6 year old, the other was my friend's sister who looks a lot like said friend, and the other two bridesmaids were teenagers.

I asked a plus one three weeks ago if she'd go; told me she had to check her schedule. Never heard back after that
