Novice lifting can last anywhere from a few months to a year or two, depending on how hard you hit the weights and where you started. Once you've reached the point where you don't make regular progress on the SS program, you are ready to move on to the intermediate stage, which can last you for a good number of years. Sorry for the quadruple post, but do any of you use Casein powder?

Just FWIW, the comments in the thread are right that you won't go crazy catabolic overnight and lose your gains if you used whey. It's just that casein, by nature of it being digested more slowly, is more efficiently absorbed and better utilized by the body. There are a few studies backing this up, and I'll dig them up if you want me to.

So it would be a good idea to take whey protein right after a workout and casein right before bed? I've generally just gone with whey after the workout but I'm at Vitamin Shoppe now contemplating picking up some casein. They have a buy one get one 50 % special..
